Abstract

We present a new theoretical treatment of the collective excitation spectrum of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a magnetic trap. We show that the interspecies interaction significantly modifies the excitation spectrum and gives rise to a rich set of new phenomena. We identify a novel metastable state of the double condensate and show that under external perturbation there can be a macroscopic quantum transition between this metastable state and the true ground state of the double condensate system.

Macroscopic quantum self-trapping and atomic tunneling in two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

Le‐Man Kuang, Zhongwen Ouyang

We present a theoretical treatment of macroscopic quantum self-trapping (MQST) and quantum coherent atomic tunneling in a zero-temperature two-species Bose-Einstein condensate system in the presence of the nonlinear self-interaction of each species, the interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the Josephson-like tunneling interaction. It is shown that the nonlinear interactions can dramatically affect the MQST and the atomic tunneling, and lead to the collapses and revivals (CR) of the population imbalance between the two condensates. The competing effects between the self-interaction of each species and the interspecies interaction can lead to a quenching of the MQST and a suppression of the CR and the Shapiro-like steps of the atomic tunneling current. It is revealed that interatomic nonlinear interactions can induce coherent atomic tunneling between two condensates even though interspecies Josephson-like tunneling coupling does not exist.

Low-lying excitations of double Bose-Einstein condensates

Brett D. Esry, Chris H. Greene

We present the excitation spectrum of a double Bose-Einstein condensate for the JILA time orbiting potential trap including the effects of gravity. We consider two cases: (i) fixed scattering lengths and equal numbers of each atomic species as a function of the number of atoms and (ii) fixed intraspecies scattering lengths and a fixed, equal number of atoms in each state as a function of interspecies scattering length. The spectra reveal the rich dynamics of the system and in particular show simultaneous collective excitations of both condensates.

Tunneling Dynamics of Two-Species Bose–Einstein Condensates

Yang Li-Min, Zhao-Xian Yu, Jiao Zhi-Yong

We have studied the tunneling dynamics of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates. It is shown that the population difference and the Josephson-like tunneling current between the two condensates exhibit oscillation behaviors and there exists macroscopic quantum self-trapping, which strongly depends on the initial state, interatomic nonlinear self-interaction, interspecies nonlinear interaction, and the total number of atoms in the two condensates.

Bose condensate in a double-well trap: Ground state and elementary excitations

Luca Salasnich, Alberto Parola, L. Reatto

We study the Bose-Einstein condensate in the MIT double-well trap. We calculate the ground-state density profile of ${}^{23}$Na atoms and the Bogoliubov spectrum of the elementary excitations as a function of the strength of the double-well barrier. In particular, we analyze the behavior of quantum-mechanical collective excitations. Finally, we discuss the observability criteria for macroscopic quantum tunneling and macroscopic quantum self-trapping.

Macroscopic quantum tunneling of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

Kenichi Kasamatsu, Yukinori Yasui, Makoto Tsubota

We show theoretically the existence of a metastable state and the possibility of decay to the ground state through macroscopic quantum tunneling in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions. Numerical analysis of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations clarifies the metastable states whose configuration preserves or breaks the symmetry of the trapping potential, depending on the interspecies interaction and the particle number. We calculate the tunneling decay rate of the metastable state by using the collective coordinate method under the WKB approximation. Then the height of the energy barrier is estimated by the saddle point solution. It is found that macroscopic quantum tunneling is observable in a wide range of particle numbers. Macroscopic quantum coherence between two distinct states is discussed; this might give an additional coherent property of two-component Bose condensed systems. Thermal effects on the decay rate are estimated.
