Abstract

We study the dependence of absorption and dispersion spectra on amplitudes and phases of the driving fields in multiple electromagnetically induced transparency. For this purpose we consider trichromatic excitation in a three-level Λ atomic system, in which a trichromatic control laser and a monochromatic probe laser are applied to two different transitions, respectively. We numerically calculate the absorption and dispersion spectra. Two characteristic features are found. Firstly, the central transparency can be made to appear or to disappear by utilizing the amplitudes and phases of the driving components. Secondly, so long as we fix the sum of two relative phases of two sideband excitation components to the central component, the absorption and dispersion spectra keep their own lineshapes unchanged no matter how we vary the respective relative phases.

Nonlinear Response of a Three-level System Driven by a Trichromatic Field and Probed by an Arbitrary Intense Monochromatic Field

Xiu Zhang

In this paper,we discussed the electromagnetically induced transparency(EIT) in three-level system driven by a trichromatic field.Firstly,we studied the transitions in three-level system driven by a trichromatic field and probed by a monochromatic field.Based on that,we wrote out the density matrix equation. Then we solved the equations by the method of numerical calculation and drawing the absorption and dispersion spectra. Two characteristic features are found. One is that the central transparency can be made by controlling the phases of excitation components and the other is that we can get different lineshapes of absorption and dispersion spectra by changing the relative phases of two sideband excitation components to the central component.

Double switching from normal to anomalous dispersion via trichromatic phase manipulation of electromagnetically induced transparency

Xiangming Hu, Guangling Cheng, Jin-hua Zou +2 more

We present a theoretical analysis of trichromatic phase manipulation of electromagnetically induced transparency and show that it is possible to obtain double switching, in which switching from normal to anomalous dispersion occurs in two separate frequency regimes. In particular, a four-level system in the N configuration is considered, in which electromagnetically induced transparency is established in the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ subsystem and the additional transition is connected to the probe transition and is coupled by a trichromatic field. It is shown that the sum of the relative phases of the sideband components compared to that of the central component plays a crucial role in the absorption and dispersion spectra. Normal dispersion with negligible absorption or anomalous dispersion with small gain can be achieved in multiple-frequency regimes by varying the sum of the relative phases. When the sum phase is changed from 0 to $\ensuremath{\pi}$, switching from normal to anomalous dispersion occurs in the two different frequency regimes. On the other hand, so long as we fix the sum of two relative phases, the absorption and dispersion spectra keep their own features unchanged no matter how we vary the respective relative phases.

Simultaneous electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption in thermal atomic medium

Shangqing Liang, Yunfei Xu, Qiang Lin

A three-level lambda system driven by multicolor control, pump, and probe fields is investigated. The pump and probe fields are derived from the same laser with opposite propagating directions. Due to the Doppler effect, the zero group-velocity atoms face bichromatic fields, while other atoms face trichromatic fields. The atomic medium shows distinct characteristics and exhibits simultaneous electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and electromagnetically induced absorption (EIA) at two frequencies. EIT and EIA peaks have a fixed relationship with frequency, which is determined by the Doppler shifts.

Trichromatic Manipulation of Kerr Nonlinearity in a Three-Level A Atomic System

Hongju Guo, Niu Yue-Ping, Wang Li-chun +2 more

Trichromatic manipulation of Kerr nonlinearity in a three-level A atomic configuration is investigated theoretically. It is shown that for a weak monochromatic probe Held, the enhanced Kerr nonlinearity can be achieved in multiple separate transparent windows due to interference effect of multiple two-photon Raman channels. Furthermore, the property of Kerr nonlinearity can be controlled by the sum of the relative phases of the sideband components of the trichromatic pump Geld compared to the central component.

Phase Dependence of Fluorescence Spectrum of a Two-Level Atom in a Trichromatic Field

LI Jing-yan, Xiangming Hu, Xiaoxia Li +3 more

We examine the phase-dependent effects in resonance fluorescence of a two-level atom driven by a trichromatic modulated field. It is shown that the fluorescence spectrum depends crucially on the sum of relative phases of the sideband components compared to the central component, not simply on the respective phases. The appearance or disappearance of the central peak and the selective elimination of the sideband peaks are achieved simply by varying the sum phase. Once the sum phase is fixed, the spectrum keeps its features unchanged regardless of the respective relative phases.

Multiple electromagnetically induced transparency in a quasi-Λ type four-level atomic system

Xiangwei Wang, Xiangyang Zhang

Using density matrix eqution, the absorption and dispersion properties of a A-type four-level system driven by coherent fields are investigated. The result obtained by means of numerical method indicates that by adjusting the intensity of Rabi frequencies of the coherent field in the steady state, three, double or single electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) can appear explicitly in this system. And the explanations of these phenomena are given by using the dressed states. In the three EIT, the location of transparent windows can be manipulated by controlling the detuning of the driving field. What's more, it is also found that the medium shows a large refractive index at each transparency window, and the group velocity of the probe laser can be enhanced.
