The phase evolution of a micromaser field without the rotating-wave approximation

Abstract

In a one-atom micromaser, the expression for the density matrix of the cavity field without the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) is derived using a perturbation method. The phase evolution of the cavity field is investigated without the RWA, and the results are compared with those within the RWA. It is shown that the virtual-photon processes make the symmetric phase distribution in the RWA asymmetric and cause additional quantum oscillation, which indicate the field's phase fluctuation and frequency shift. Virtual photons also cause an extra phase distribution to the field which is initially in a vacuum state. The unique characteristic of the phase properties in the course of forming a photon-number state is investigated. Other new phenomena such as the undamped oscillation of the phase variance against the injected atomic number are found.

The evolution of a micromaser cavity field without the rotating-wave approximation

Zhengdong Liu, Liang Zeng, Shiyao Zhu

In a micromaser, the evolution of cavity-field entropy and the Fano factor with the injected atomic number is investigated with and without the rotating-wave approximation. The micromaser may become a decreasing-entropy system under specific system parameters. Virtual-photon processes cause an additional quantum oscillation which relates to the atom–field coupling constant and the field frequency.

Evolution of Field Entropy in the Formation of a Photon-Number State

Zhengdong Liu, Liang Zeng

In the formation of a photon-number state in a micromaser, the evolution of field entropy versus the injected atom number is studied with and without the rotating-wave approximation, and the results in these two different cases are compared. An entropy-decreasing system and the quantum oscillation induced by virtual photons are discussed.

Phase fluctuations in the Jaynes-Cummings model with and without the rotating-wave approximation

Jin-sheng Peng, Gao‐xiang Li

In this paper, we have investigated the time evolution of the phase operator of the radiation field in the Jaynes-Cummings model with and without the rotating-wave approximation, making use of the phase formalism of Barnett and Pegg [J. Mod. Opt. 36, 7 (1989); Phys. Rev. A 39, 1665 (1989)]. We verify by an analytical method that the atomic Rabi oscillation leads to phase dissipation of the radiation field, and also that the effect of the virtual-photon field can exhibit quantum fluctuations in the atom-field-coupling system and lead to a frequency shift of the radiation field.

Micromaser equations without the rotating-wave approximation: the nonresonant case

F. De Zela, E. Solano, A. M. Gago

The equations for the micromaser are derived without assuming the validity of the rotating- wave approximation (RWA) in the Scully-Lamb model for a single-mode maser off resonance. The treatment is based on Swain's continued fractions approach, by which the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian describing the system of atoms plus cavity field can be iteratively determined to any desired order and then used to obtain the micromaser equations. These are valid to second order in the parameter g, the coupling constant of the atom-field interaction. The procedure can be extended, to any desired order in g, by successive iterations. Through numerically evaluating the micromaser spectrum we compare our results with those of the RWA. We predict a relative shift, stemming from the Bloch-Siegert shift, which in case of the spectra corresponding to two-photon correlations should be measurable through atomic selective field ionization.

Quantum dynamics of a f-deformed cavity-field beyond the rotating wave approximation

Mohsen Daeimohammad

The aim of this study is to investigate dynamical properties of a two-mode f-deformed cavity- field ‎coupled to an effective two-level atom with and without the rotating wave approximation. The first ‎section discusses the theoretical model of the interaction between a two-mode cavity-field and an ‎effective two-level atom within the framework of an f-DJCM without the rotating wave ‎approximation. After that, we obtain the reduced density matrix of the cavity-field with and without ‎the rotating-wave approximation. Then, we have investigated the effect of the counter-rotating ‎terms on temporal evolution of various non-classical properties of the cavity-field, i.e., photon-‎counting statistics, the cross correlation between the modes of the field, and the quantum ‎fluctuations of the quadrature components. Particularly, we compare the numerical result for three ‎different values of the deformation parameter q (q=1, q=1.1, q=0.9) with and without applying the rotating ‎wave approximation. By using of the numerical method, we concluded that even under the ‎condition in which the RWA is considered to be valid, there are the significant effects of virtual-‎photon field on the photon-counting statistics, the cross correlation between the modes of the ‎field, and the quantum fluctuations of the quadrature components‎.

QUANTUM STATISTICAL PROPERTIES OF RADIATION

Shahid Qamar

We present a study on the quantum statistical properties of radiation in a one-photon micromaser. In particular, the possibility of generating steady-state squeezing is investigated. The spectral properties of the radiation field in a micromaser are also studied. \n \nWe show that the steady-state squeezing can be generated in a lossless micromaser by injecting the atoms in a coherent superposition of upper and lower states. It is shown by considering initial vacuum number and thermal state of the cavity field, that for a particular choice of the interaction time field evolves to a squeezed state. Steady- state squeezing is found to be independent of the initial state of the cavity field. However, the temporal evolution of the squeezing depends on the initial state of the field. Effects of cavity losses and pump fluctuations on steady-state squeezing are also investigated. \n \nFinally, an exact analytic expression for the linewidth of a micromaser in the absence of cavity losses is obtained by evaluating the two-time correlation function. A comparison with the natural linewidth of laser shows that under certain conditions gain contribution to the linewidth is same in both the cases. We also, derive an exact expression for the phoston distribution function and show that for a particular choice of the interaction time, the number state of the field can be generated.
