Modulated Photon Emission of Eu 3+ in Microsphere Cavity

Abstract

Fused silica microsphere with a few Eu 3+ ions on the equator is fabricated. The photon emission sharply modulated by whispering gallery (WG) modes is observed under excitation of 395 nm laser, which is in agreement with the prediction in theory. The quality factor of the WG modes in microsphere is estimated larger than 3000 from the emission spectrum, which is limited by our monochrometer. It proves that pumping Eu 3+ in microsphere cavity in free space is feasible, and this system seems suitable for realizing strong coupling in future quantum computation purposes.

Coupling single atoms or molecules with a microsphere: a progress report

V. Lefèvre-Seguin

Silica microspheres have been demonstrated to provide a permanent resonator which combines small mode volumes with the highest observed quality factors (Q>2.10/sup 9/) corresponding to photon storage times of the order of one microsecond. These properties have allowed us to make a very low-threshold laser with Nd-doped silica microspheres (200 nW absorbed pump power, i.e. 10/sup 6/ excited ions/mode). These microlasers are now operated at 2 K to benefit from a smaller homogeneous linewidth. We then expect to reach the "thresholdless" regime with only a few excited ions. These experiments can also be considered as a first step toward Cavity QED experiments in the strong coupling regime with single atoms or molecules coupled to a whispering gallery mode.

Very High- Q Whispering-Gallery Mode Resonances Observed on Fused Silica Microspheres

Laurent Collot, V. Lefèvre-Seguin, M. Brune +2 more

We have studied by phase modulation spectroscopy the whispering-gallery modes (Mie resonances) of 60 to 200 μm diameter microspheres obtained by fusing with a CO 2 laser the end of a high-transmission silica fibre. An evanescent wave at 780 nm was produced by total internal reflection of a phase-modulated semiconductor diode laser beam in a glass prism. It was coupled into the Mie mode of the microsphere positioned at a fixed distance from the prism face. The spectrum was obtained by measuring the phase-to-amplitude conversion of the laser beam modulation as its carrier frequency was scanned. Record Q -factors ⩾ 2 · 10 9 were observed, corresponding to photon storage times longer than 1 μs. Applications of these resonances to fundamental and applied projects are discussed.

Trapping photons in microspheres for cavity QED experiments

S. Haroche

Summary form only given, as follows: The high Q whispering gallery modes of silica microspheres are promising for quantum optics and nonlinear optics experiments involving atoms and photons stored in very small volumes. We have developed the technology of these resonators, learning how to couple light in and out through optical fibers, how to obtain and measure record Q factors, and how to probe, by near-field optical microscopy, the electric field distribution immediately outside the sphere. Whispering gallery mode lasers have also been obtained with microspheres made of silica doped with neodymium ions. We describe these experiments and discuss projects involving the coupling of whispering gallery modes to single atoms or ions to perform cavity QED experiments in the optical domain.

Frequency tuning of the whispering-gallery modes of silica microspheres for cavity quantum electrodynamics and spectroscopy

Wolf von Klitzing, Romain Long, Vladimir S. Ilchenko +2 more

We have tuned the whispering-gallery modes of a fused-silica microresonator over nearly 1 nm at 800 nm, i.e., over half a free spectral range, or 10(6) linewidths of the resonator. This result has been achieved by use of a new method based on the stretching of a two-stem microsphere. We describe devices that will permit new cavity QED experiments with this high- Q optical resonator when it is desirable to optimize its coupling to emitters with given transition frequencies. The demonstrated tuning capability is compatible with both UHV and low-temperature operation, which should be useful for future experiments with laser-cooled atoms or single quantum dots.

The entangled photons generation in third order nonlinearity of spontaneous parametric down conversion by whispering gallery mode resonator

Jing-Ming Cao, Jolly Xiaver

We manipulated the simulation and apparatus to generate the entangled quantum photons by the enhanced higher quality factor in waveguide of whispering gallery mode resonator in silica microsphere. As the several nonlinear optics effects have been validated in micro-disk (lithium niobate materials based), others micro-cavity (microfiber and micro ring on the chip) and second harmonic generation (SHG) on the surface of silica microsphere because of the characterization of enhanced higher quality factor Q and smaller volume mode in these resonator. However until now for the second third nonlinearity of spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), third order nonlinearity of spontaneous parametric down conversion (TOSPDC) and spontaneous four wave mixing (SFWM) in whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonator of silica microsphere rarely have not been fully investigated and verified to generate the triple and pair entangled photons where are widely applied on the applications of biosensor, quantum communications and spectroscopy, respectively. Specially, the features of silica microsphere have attracted many applications due to the simple fabrication, simplified materials melted by silica fiber. The work we demonstrated in this paper based on the breaking of the dispersion rules to make perfect phase matching in normal dispersion in silica microsphere depending on the blue laser spectrum in visible spectrum, then manipulated the modified size of microsphere to detune the pump laser of free spectral range (FSR) and both shift the geometrical dispersion are characterized in the variation of FSR given by (see PDF for equation), where n is refractive index, R is the microspheres radius and m is mode numbers in resonator, to compensate the materials dispersion given by (see PDF for equation), where c is the speed of light and λ is pump laser wavelength to fulfill the perfect phase matching in parametric down conversion regimes and the modeling fabrication coupling results also will be presented.
