Abstract

We report the investigation of polarization and spatial information recovery using a fiber-coupled phase-conjugate mirror. A marked dependence of the phase-conjugate output on the input-beam conditions is experimentally observed. A theoretical model for these phenomena is also discussed.

Phase conjugation of mode scrambled optical beams: Application to spatial recovery and interbeam temporal information exchange

Ram Yahalom, Kazuo Kyuma, Amnon Yariv

Coupling of temporal information between two beams is demonstrated using a combination of a multimode fiber and a photorefractive passive phase conjugation mirror. It is shown that the polarization and spatial properties are fully recovered but temporal information is exchanged. The theoretical explanation for these phenomena and possible applications are discussed.

Conjugation fidelity and reflectivity in photorefractive double phase-conjugate mirrors

We present an experimental study of the behavior of photorefractive double phase-conjugate mirrors that illustrates recent theoretical predictions. We observe a sharp fidelity threshold that significantly depends on the specific feature size in the input beams. Furthermore, we find that if the two input beams have unequal intensities the conjugation process is asymmetric and the steady-state fidelity is better on the side of the crystal on which the more-intense beam enters.

We present a theoretical and experimental study of the conjugation fidelity of a double phase conjugate mirror (DPCM). We demonstrate that DPCM is reciprocal what leads to the conservation of the fidelity-transmission product.

Compensation for phase distortions in nonlinear media by phase conjugation

David M. Pepper, Amnon Yariv

We demonstrate theoretically that the distortion-correction property of phase-conjugate beams propagating in reverse through aberrating media is also operative when the indices of refraction of the media depend on the intensity. A necessary condition is that the phase-conjugate mirror that generates the reflected beam possess a unity (magnitude) “reflection” coefficient.

By treating coherence as a shareable resource between multiple degrees of freedom (DoFs), we experimentally demonstrate a reversible exchange of coherence between polarization and spatial DoFs using only unitary transformations.
