Abstract

We report experimental investigations of two kinds of high-contrast optical filters by utilizing a laser-pumped atomic vapor and properly-designed Fabry-Perot bulk etalon, which are based on the demand of the detection of quantum correlated Stokes and anti-Stokes photon pairs in a Λ-type three-level atomic ensemble, respectively. Laser-pumped cesium (Cs) atomic filter achieves typical peak transmission ~ 74.3% and the distinction ratio between excitation channel and 9.19GHz- frequency-detuned signal channel is ~ 26.7 dB at 47.15°C. The transmission peak can be tuned within the range of Doppler line-width of Cs D2 line. The temperature-stabilized narrow-band etalon filter with dozens of GHz resonant transmission tunability is realized with typical peak transmission of ~ 91.7% and the distinction ratio between pump and signal channel of ~27.5 dB. These techniques are useful for atom-photon interaction experiments, especially for Stokes and anti-Stokes photon pairs generation experiments based on collective Raman excitation of Cs atomic ensemble.

We report experimental investigation of an atomic optical filters by utilizing a laser-pumped cesium(Cs) atomic vapor cell, which is based on the demand of the detection of quantum correlated Stokes and anti-Stokes photon pairs in a Λ-type three-level atomic ensemble, respectively.Firstly,we calculated the probe transmission rate as function of pump intensity and temperature of cesium ensemble in theory, then in experiment,we achieves a peak transmission ~ 74.3% of probe laser and the distinction ratio between excitation channel and 9.2 GHz(hyperfine splitting in Cs ground state) frequency-detuned signal channel is about ~ 26.7 dB at 47.15 ℃.In order to avoid reflected pump laser by atomic vapor,we utilized a hollow pump laser to prepare states and make the contrast of the experiment results with solid pump and hollow pump.

By using Faraday optical filter combined with four-wave mixing (FWM) amplifier, a narrow bandwidth optical amplifying atomic filter with switchable dual-passband is demonstrated experimentally. The two transmission peaks of the filter correspond to the Stokes and anti-Stokes frequencies, exhibiting a Raman gain in 13-and 17-fold, respectively, with bandwidth of ∼120 MHz.By properly setting pump laser detuning, switching between filter passbands is realized. We also investigate the dependence of peak transmission on both pump laser intensity and Rb cell temperature. This atomic filter can find practical applications in long-distance laser communications and laser remote-sensing systems.

Narrowband tunable filter based on velocity-selective optical pumping in an atomic vapor

Alessandro Ceré, Valentina Parigi, Marta Abad +3 more

We demonstrate a tunable narrowband filter based on optical-pumping-induced circular dichroism in rubidium vapor. The filter achieves a peak transmission of 14.6%, a linewidth of 80 MHz, and an out-of-band extinction of >or=35 dB. The transmission peak can be tuned within the range of the Doppler linewidth of the D1 line of atomic rubidium at 795 nm. While other atomic filters work at frequencies far from absorption, the presented technique provides light resonant with atomic media, useful for atom-photon interaction experiments. The technique could readily be extended to other alkali atoms.

Analysis of high-efficiency widely-tunable N-resonances in Cs vapor

A. Krasteva, S. Gateva, Stefan Tzvetkov +3 more

The narrow-band coherent N-type resonance, promising for the development of advanced atomic clocks, can be considered as a type of three-photon resonance, where a two-photon Raman excitation is combined with a resonant optical pumping field. In this communication, we present an experimental study and a theoretical analysis related to three-photon, bi-chromatic excitation of Cs atomic vapor contained in an 8-mm long cell with 20 Torr of neon. If a coupling laser is fixed at a frequency that is lower by several GHz than the position of the absorption profile of the F g = 4 set of transitions, and a probe laser is tuned over the D 2 line (λ = 852 nm), a narrow high-contrast enhanced absorption N-resonance will be observed in the probe light profile, superimposed on the absorption profile of the F g = 4 set of transitions. We present theoretical modeling aimed to clarify the processes behind the efficiency of the N-resonance preparation for different frequency positions of the coupling laser within the D 2 line of Cs.

Coherent Population Trapping resonances on lower atomic levels of Doppler broadened optical lines

Ersoy Şahin, G. Özen, Ramiz Hamid +2 more

We have detected and analysed narrow high-contrast coherent population trapping (CPT) resonances, which are induced in absorption of the weak probe light beam by the counterpropagating two-frequency pumping radiation. Our experimental investigations have been carried out on example of nonclosed three level Lambda systems formed by spectral components of the Doppler broadened D2 line of cesium atoms. We have established that CPT resonances in transmission of the probe beam (in the cesium vapor), at definite conditions, may have not only more contrast but also much lesser width in comparison with well- known CPT resonances in transmission of the corresponding two-frequency pumping radiation. Thus CPT resonances, detected by the elaborated method, may be used in atomic frequency standards and sensitive magnetometers (based on the CPT phenomenon) and also in ultahigh resolution spectroscopy of atoms and molecules.

Narrowband Correlated Photon Quadruplets From a Cold Atomic Ensemble

Yifan Li, Boon Long Ng, Chang Hoong Chow +2 more

We demonstrate a bright correlated photon-pair source using double-A four-wave mixing in a87Rb cold atomic ensemble prepared in a magneto-optical trap. A counter-propagating pump configuration, combined with the small-angle collection along the propagation direction, enables clear distinction of resulting Stokes (780nm) and anti-Stokes (795nm) photons from pump fields. From measurements, we infer a generation rate of correlated photon pairs up to 107count per second (cps) into a collection mode waist of 175 μm. This is competitive with previous results observed in cold atomic ensembles [1], [2]. Their narrow spectral bandwidth makes these photons highly suitable for direct interaction with atomic systems and long-distance fiber transmission.
