Abstract. We consider a non relativistic quantum system consisting of K heavy and N light particles in dimension three, where each heavy particle interacts with the light ones via a two-body potential αV. No interaction is assumed among particles of the same kind. Choosing an initial state in a product form and assuming α sufficiently small we characterize the asymptotic dynamics of the system in the limit of small mass ratio, with an explicit control of the error. In the case K = 1 the result is extended to arbitrary α. The proof relies on a perturbative analysis and exploits a generalized version of the standard dispersive estimates for the Schrödinger group. Exploiting the asymptotic formula, it is also outlined an application to the problem of the decoherence effect produced on a heavy particle by the interaction with the light ones. 1.
We consider the resonant Fermi gas, that is, two-component fermions in three dimensions interacting by a short-range potential of large scattering length. We introduce a quantity, the three-body contact, that determines several observables. Within the zero-range model, the number of nearby fermion triplets, the large-momentum tail of the center-of-mass momentum distribution of nearby fermion pairs, as well as the large-momentum tail of the two-particle momentum distribution, are expressed in terms of the three-body contact. For a small finite interaction range, the formation rate of deeply bound dimers by three-body recombination, as well as the three-body contribution to the finite-range correction to the energy, are expressed in terms of the three-body contact and of a three-body parameter. This three-body parameter, which vanishes in the zero-range limit, is defined through the asymptotic behavior of the zero-energy scattering state at distances intermediate between the range and the two-body scattering length. In general, the three-body contact has different contributions labeled by spin and angular momentum indices, and the three-body parameter can depend on those indices. We also include the generalization to unequal masses for
↑ and
↓ particles. With respect to the relation between three-body loss rate and number of nearby triplets stated in [Petrov, Salomon and Shlyapnikov, PRL 93, 090404 (2004)], the present work adds a derivation, expresses the proportionality factor in terms of the three-body parameter, and includes the general case where there are several contributions to the three-body contact and several three-body parameters.

The asymptotic properties of a Schrödinger wave function which represents the bound ground state of a system of three interacting particles are examined. It is assumed that the interaction can be described by a static potential which is the sum of three two-body potentials and one three-body potential, where the potentials have the property that if any one of the particles is separated from the other two by a distance which tends to infinity, then the part of the potential energy which depends on the position of that particle tends to zero. The problem is treated nonrelativistically. Decreasing exponential bounds on the ground-state three-body wave function are established in configuration space. It is shown that these bounds depend only on the masses of the three particles, on the ground-state energy of the three-body system, and on the lower bounds on the spectra of the Hamiltonians for the three two-body systems arising when one of the three particles is removed and the remaining two interact through the corresponding two-body potential. It is furthermore shown that the three-body wave function in momentum space admits of analytic continuation into a tube-region in complex momentum space, which tube-region is the product of real momentum space and a convex bounded region in imaginary momentum space. The tube-region is explicitly determined. The implications of the results for the theory of the vertex function in quantum field theory are discussed. The relevancy of the results obtained in this paper to the variational computation of energy levels and wave functions of three-body systems is also briefly discussed. In the course of the derivation some generalizations are pointed out; in particular, the final results remain valid for a class of more general interactions, which cannot be described by static potentials. Likewise, the results remain valid for a class of spin-dependent interactions.
