Abstract

A dynamic photonic band gap is created in hot vapor for controlled reflection, transmission or storage of light. A Stark-shifting laser sets up a standing wave which creates a rapidly reconfigurable periodic index contrast.

Rapidly reconfigurable optically induced photonic crystals in hot rubidium vapor

Through periodic index modulation, we create two different types of photonic structures in a heated rubidium vapor for controlled reflection, transmission, and diffraction of light. The modulation is achieved through the use of the ac Stark effect resulting from a standing-wave control field. The periodic intensity structures create translationally invariant index profiles analogous to photonic crystals in spectral regions of steep dispersion. Experimental results are consistent with modeling.

Photonic Band Gaps in One-Dimensionally Ordered Cold Atomic Vapors

Alexander Schilke, Claus Zimmermann, Ph. W. Courteille +1 more

We experimentally investigate the Bragg reflection of light at one-dimensionally ordered atomic structures by using cold atoms trapped in a laser standing wave. By a fine-tuning of the periodicity, we reach the regime of multiple reflection due to the refractive index contrast between layers, yielding an unprecedented high reflectance efficiency of 80%. This result is explained by the occurrence of a photonic band gap in such systems, in accordance with previous predictions.

Optical control of light propagation in photonic crystal based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Dan Wang, Jinze Wu, Junxiang Zhang

A kind of photonic crystal structure with modulation of the refractive index is investigated both experimentally and theoretically for exploiting electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). The combination of EIT with periodically modulated refractive index medium gives rise to high efficiency reflection as well as forbidden transmission in a three-level atomic system coupled by standing wave. We show an accurate theoretical simulation via transfer-matrix theory, automatically accounting for multilayer reflections, thus fully demonstrate the existence of photonic crystal structure in atomic vapor.
