Lattice Quantum Mechanics: An Application to Bose–Einstein Condensation

Abstract

A lattice formulation of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics is presented, based on a formal analogy with discrete kinetic theory. The method is applied to the Gross–Pitaevski equation, a specific form of self-interacting nonlinear Schrödinger equation relevant to the study of Bose–Einstein condensation.

Bose–Einstein condensate wave function and nonlinear Schrödinger equation

Viktor Borisovich Bobrov, S. A. Trigger

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for the ground-state wave function of an inhomogeneous boson system is derived in the self-consistent Hartree–Fock approximation without the use of the formalism of anomalous averages. The results obtained correspond to the Gross–Pitaevskii equation for the Bose–Einstein condensate wave function when using the delta-shaped boson interaction potential.

Ground-state computation of Bose-Einstein condensates by an imaginary-time quantum lattice Boltzmann scheme

Silvia Palpacelli, Sauro Succi A, Renato Spigler

The multidimensional formulation of the quantum lattice Boltzmann (qLB) scheme is extended to the case of nonlinear quantum wave equations. More specifically, imaginary-time formulations of the qLB scheme are developed and applied to the numerical computation of the ground state of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in one and two spatial dimensions. The calculation is validated through detailed comparison with other numerical methods, as well as with analytical results based on the Thomas-Fermi approximation. The linear scaling of the time-step size with the spatial mesh spacing, a distinctive feature of the present quantum kinetic approach, is also numerically demonstrated.

Adiabaticity in nonlinear quantum dynamics: Bose-Einstein condensate in a time-varying box

Y. B. Band, Boris A. Malomed, Marek Trippenbach

A simple model of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in a box whose size varies with time is studied to determine the nature of adiabaticity in the nonlinear dynamics obtained within the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation). Analytical and numerical methods are used to determine the nature of adiabaticity in this nonlinear quantum system. Criteria for validity of an adiabatic approximation are formulated.

Nonlinear dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

Zhengwei Xie, Ze-Xian Cao, Efim I Kats +1 more

The dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices with the long-range dipole-dipole interactions, the short-range on-site interactions, and hopping terms is reduced to the generalized discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. We present the different types of solitary excitations which appear in different parameter regions. We anticipate that these excitations will be observable and discuss how the model parameters can be tuned in experiments.

Study of localized solutions of the nonlinear discrete model for dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice by the homoclinic orbit method

Azeddine Messikh, Bakhram Umarov

It is well known that the dynamics of the Bose Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an optical lattice can be described in tight-binding approximation by the discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (DNLSE) [1,2]. This model opens the way to study different aspects of the BEC dynamics in an optical lattice, such as discrete solitons and nonlinear localized modes and their stability and dynamics, modulational instability, superfluid-insulator transition, etc.
