Abstract

Doppler-free absorption spectra of resonance laser fields are studied upon two-stage excitation of cesium atoms according to the schemes 6S 1/2 →6P 3/2 →6D 5/2 and 6S 1/2 →6P 3/2 →8S 1/2 . The obtained experimental results are in qualitative agreement with the theory. In the case of weak absorption saturation, the width of resonances is mainly determined by two-photon transitions. The efficiencies of the two variants of two-stage excitation of the 7P 3/2 level are compared. The possibility of fabrication of a gas laser operating on the 455-nm 7P 3/2 →6S 1/2 transition with the optical depopulation of the lower operating level by an additional laser is discussed.

Stimulated directional emission induced by two-photon excitation of the Xe 6p′ and Xe 7p states

Vadim A. Alekseev, Peter J. M. van der Burgt, Donald W. Setser

Stimulated emission (SE) induced by pulsed two-photon excitation of the 6p′[1/2]0, 6p′[3/2]2, 7p[1/2]0, 7p[3/2]2, and 7p[5/2]2 states of the Xe atom has been studied. Spectra of SE were recorded in the 800–3500 nm region, which covers the 6p′, 7p → 7s (2500–3500 nm), 6p′, 7p → 5d (1000–2000 nm), 7s → 6p (1200–1900 nm) transitions, as well as the near-IR 6p → 6s (800–1000 nm) transitions. It is shown that excitation of the 7p states results in radiative cascade via the 7s states, 7p → 7s → 6p, although at least one case of cascading via the 5d states is also observed. Spectra of SE induced by excitation of the 6p′ states are dominated by the 6p′ → 6s′ transitions in the near IR and the 6p′ → 5d[1/2]1 → 6p[1/2]1 → 6s[3/2]1 cascade; the 6p′ → 7s → 6p cascade is also observed, although the secondary 7s → 6p emission is rather weak in comparison with excitation of the 7p states.

Magic wavelengths for the 6S-7P transition of cesium atoms

Jiandong Bai, Yang Liu, Shaofeng Fan +5 more

For the trapped pre-cooled atoms in an optical dipole trap (ODT), the magic-wavelength ODT can eliminate the differential light shift of the transition between two atomic states, so that the transition frequency between the two states is the same as that of atoms in the free space, which is of great significance for improving the experimental repetition rate and reducing the atomic decoherence in the fields of cold atom physics, quantum optics, and precision measurement. Here we calculate the dynamic polarizabilities of cesium 6S ground state and 7P excited state by using the multi-level model for the ODT with laser wavelength from 1200 to 2000 nm. The magic wavelengths of ODT are obtained for the linearly and circularly polarized laser beams at the intersection of dynamic polarizabilities of two atomic states. Furthermore, we analyze the robustness of the magic trapping conditions and the feasibility of the experimental operation near the telecom C-band wavelength.

Optical probing of cold trapped atoms

Richard W. Fox, H. G. Robinson, S. L. Gilbert +2 more

Transitions between excited states of laser-cooled and laser-trapped rubidium and cesium atoms are probed by use of fiber and diode lasers. High-resolution Doppler-free spectra are detected by observation of the absorption and fluorescence of light from the intermediate level of two-step cascade systems. The optical double-resonance spectra show Autler–Townes splitting in the weak probe limit and more complicated spectra for a strongly coupled three-level system.

Experimental Study of Cesium 7P Fluorescence Generated by Energy Pooling Collisions

Wei Su

This paper reports an experimental boservation of the variations of the cesium 7P fluorescence intensity with experimental conditions:the cesium oven temperature and the pumping laser intensity which produces the excited 6P cesium atoms to generate the 6P_(3/2)+6P_(3/2)→7P_J+6S_(1/2) energy pooling collisions. An explanation is given to the emerged two-peak effect in the fluorescence intensities.

Doppler-free saturation of the cascade fluorescence that follows excitation of the $5s \to 6p $ transition in atomic rubidium

J.E. Navarro-Navarrete, A. Díaz-Calderón, L M Hoyos-Campo +4 more

We present an experimental scheme that produces Doppler-free spectra of the $5s \to 6p $ second resonance transition in atomic rubidium. The experiment uses the saturation of the cascade fluorescence that occurs when thermal rubidium atoms interact with two counterpropagating $420 $ nm laser beams of comparable intensity. Part of the excited atomic population goes through the $5p_{3/2}$ level which then decays by emission of $780$ nm photons. Narrow dips appear in this otherwise broad $780$ nm fluorescence, which allows resolution of the $6p_{3/2}$ hyperfine structure. A rate equation model is used to interpret the spectra. It is also shown that these narrow peaks can be used to lock the frequency of the $420 $ nm laser. Using a second beam modulated in frequency produces three sets of spectra with known frequency spacings that can be used to perform an all-optical measurement of the hyperfine splittings of the $6p_{3/2} $ manifold in rubidium.

IR laser generation based on atomic transitions of cesium and rubidium when pumping to high-located levels

A. A. Babin, Michail V. Volkov, Sergey G Garanin +5 more

We obtain laser generation on cesium and rubidium atoms at wavelengths in the range of 2 – 5.5 µm when pumping to high-located levels (7P - IOP for cesium atoms and 6P – 8P for rubidium atoms). The pumping conversion efficiency into lasing energy is investigated.
