Summary form only given. In atom optics, techniques were proposed to confine atoms in 2D waveguides utilizing light potentials or static magnetic fields on surfaces. For atoms close to the surface at distances shorter than the optical wavelength, the atoms-surface van der Waals interaction is inevitable and represents a complicating factor for these experiments. Here we propose to confine neutral atoms directly in a particular state of a surface potential well thanks to a laser induced Raman transfer connecting optical transitions of free cold atoms to the surface bound states. We numerically solve the 1D Schrodinger equation for cesium atom parameters. To populate the atom-surface long range states we consider cold Cs atoms near a dielectric surface interacting simultaneously with two resonant lasers.

Laser-induced quantum adsorption of atoms on a surface

Anton E. Afanasiev, Павел Николаевич Мелентьев, V. I. Balykin

A method of the quantum adsorption of atoms on a surface is proposed and experimentally implemented. The loading of atoms into a surface potential well (adsorption) occurs due to the loss of kinetic energy in the process of the inelastic collision of two laser-excited atoms. This scheme is implemented for Rb atoms adsorbed on the surface of a YAG crystal. The possibility of producing microstructures of arbitrary shape that consist of atoms localized on the dielectric surface is also demonstrated.

Atom surface trap based on laser-induced quantum adsorption

Anton E. Afanasiev, Павел Николаевич Мелентьев, V. I. Balykin

A method of the quantum adsorption of atoms on a surface is proposed and experimentally implemented. The loading of atoms into a surface potential well (adsorption) was realized due to the loss of the kinetic energy in the process of the inelastic collision of two laser-excited atoms. This scheme is implemented for Rb atoms adsorbed on the surface of a YAG crystal. The dependence of the quantum adsorption rate on the laser radiation frequency is experimentally investigated. The possibility of producing microstructures of arbitrary shape that consist of atoms localized on the dielectric surface is also demonstrated and the opportunities of creation of nanostructures are discussed.
