Entropy and the Segal-Bargmann transform

Abstract

The Segal-Bargmann transform A is a unitary isomorphism of the quantum mechanical configuration space L2(Rn,ν) onto the Segal-Bargmann, or phase, space HL2(Cn,μ) of entire functions square integrable with respect to μ. Here μ and ν are Gaussian measures, and for z∈Cn and measurable f:Rn→CAf(z) :=∫Rn dν(t)f(t)exp(−z2/2+√z⋅t) if the integral converges. Af is defined for all f∈Lp(Rn,ν) if 1<p⩽∞, but A does not preserve Lp structure if p≠2. Specifically, it is proven here that A is a compact map from Lp(Rn,ν) to Lq(Cn,μ) if 1⩽q<2 and p>1+q/2 (which implies p>q) and in this case ‖A‖p→q⩽((1+q/2−p′q/2)(1−q/2))−n/2q where p′ is the dual of p. Moreover, a calculation with test functions shows that ‖A‖p→q=∞ if q>2 or p<1+q/2 (which is implied by p<q). Using an improved operator norm estimate (analogous to the Hausdorff-Young inequality) we prove Hirschman type entropy inequalities for f∈L2(Rn,ν), (p−1−2−1)S(f )⩽(q−1−2−1)S(Af )+nCp,q‖f‖22, where 1⩽q<2, p>1+q/2, Cp,q is given explicitly as a function of p and q and S(g) is the entropy of g. Examples given here show A is not entropy preserving. So these inequalities provide constraints on the change in entropy. Similarly, we get energy-entropy, or log-Sobolev, inequalities a1S(Af )+a2S(f )⩽a3‖f‖22+a4〈f,Nf〉, for f in a dense subspace of L2(Rn,ν). Here 〈f,Nf〉 is the Dirichlet form of the energy operator N in the configuration space and the ai can have various signs and are also given explicitly. The principal results of this article are generalized Heisenberg uncertainty relations, namely they are constraints on Af, the phase space representation, given information about f, the configuration space representation.

On Shannon entropies in μ-deformed Segal-Bargmann analysis

Claudio Pita-Ruiz, Stephen Bruce Sontz

We consider a μ-deformation of the Segal-Bargmann transform, which is a unitary map from a μ-deformed quantum configuration space onto a μ-deformed quantum phase space (the μ-deformed Segal-Bargmann space). Both of these Hilbert spaces have canonical orthonormal bases. We obtain explicit formulas for the Shannon entropy of some of the elements of these bases. We also consider two reverse log-Sobolev inequalities in the μ-deformed Segal-Bargmann space, which have been proved in a previous work, and show that a certain known coefficient in them is the best possible.

Properties of Segal’s Entropy for Quantum Systems

Andrzej Łuczak, Hanna Podsȩdkowska

Properties of Segal’s entropy for semifinite and finite von Neumann algebras are investigated. In particular, its invariance with respect to a trace-preserving normal *-homomorphism is studied, as well as norm-continuity in the trace norm on the set of bounded in the operator norm density matrices.

Coherent States on Spheres

Brian C. Hall, Jeffrey J. Mitchell, Jeffrey +1 more

Abstract. We describe a family of coherent states and an associated resolution of the identity for a quantum particle whose classical configuration space is the d-dimensional sphere S d. The coherent states are labeled by points in the associated phase space T ∗ (S d). These coherent states are not of Perelomov type but rather are constructed as the eigenvectors of suitably defined annihilation operators. We describe as well the Segal–Bargmann representation for the system, the associated unitary Segal–Bargmann transform, and a natural inversion formula. Although many of these results are in principle special cases of the results of B. Hall and M. Stenzel, we give here a substantially different description based on ideas of T. Thiemann and of K. Kowalski and J. Rembieliński. All of these results can be generalized to a system whose configuration space is an arbitrary compact symmetric space. We focus on the sphere case in order to carry out the calculations in a self-contained and explicit way.

Entropy in nonlinear quantum mechanics. II

Paul B. Slater

For pt.I see ibid., vol.25, p.359 (1992). Regarding the discussion of Peres (1989) and Weinberg (1989) concerning a suitable definition of entropy in nonlinear quantum mechanics, two further observations are made. Firstly, by regarding the covariance matrix of the probability distribution over the phase space of wavefunctions as the nonlinear counterpart (p NL ) of the (linear) density matrix (p L ) and employing -Tr p NL In p NL , one obtains a limiting transition (as nonlinearities vanish), in which this entropy measure converges to the definition in ordinary quantum mechanics, -Tr p L In p L . Secondly, it is argued that Peres' contention that 'nonlinear variants of the Schrodinger equation violate the second law of thermodynamics' is flawed in that it relies upon the entropy of mixing of nonorthogonal states which as Dieks an van Dijk (1988) have indicated is an undefined concept. A proper approach to associating a quantum mechanical entropy with a mixture of a particle into two non-orthogonal states-by first estimating a suitable two-particle density matrix (p) and then employing -Tr p In p-is outlined.

A Short Note on Quantum Entropies

Amelia Carolina Sparavigna

In quantum statistical mechanics, the extension of the classical Gibbs entropy is the von Neumann entropy, obtained from a quantum-mechanical system described by means of its density matrix. Here we shortly discuss this entropy and the use of generalized entropies instead of it

Wehrl entropy of entangled Segal-Bargmann oscillators

David Alonso López, José A. R. Cembranos, David Díaz-Guerra +1 more

In this manuscript we study the Wehrl entropy of entangled oscillators. This semiclassical entropy associated with the phase-space description of quantum mechanics can be used for formulating uncertainty relations and for a quantification of entanglement. We focus on a system of two coupled oscillators described within its Segal-Bargmann space. This Hilbert space of holomorphic functions integrable with respect to a given Gaussian-like measure is particularly convenient to deal with harmonic oscillators. Indeed, the Stone-von Neumann theorem allows us to work in this space in a full correspondence with the ladder operators formalism. In addition, the Husimi pseudoprobability distribution is directly computed within the Segal-Bargmann formalism. Once we obtain the Husimi function, we analyze the Wehrl entropy and mutual information.
