Abstract

A new method for waveform measurement of photon echoes using a modified Michelson interferometer has been developed. The experimental setup uses collinear geometry, and photon echo signals are detected using a double-phase modulation technique. The amplitude and phase of photon echoes and those of excitation pulses are simultaneously measured by this technique. The method has been applied to a photon echo experiment on a dye solution. The results are explained using a stochastic modulation model with an accumulation effect of population grating.

Fluorescence detection of femtosecond accumulated photon echo

Kiyoshi Uchikawa, H. Ohsawa, S. Saikan

Generally, the photon echo measurement in opaque and scattering materials is difficult since the scattered pump beam overloads the detector. In this sense, a different modulation technique which does not induce the intensity modulation of the pump beam, is desirable for the scattering materials. We previously reported [1] that phase modulation method is also applicable to the measurement of accumulated photon echo. This technique has been much improved, and we have succeeded the fluorescence detection of the femtosecond accumulated photon echo.

High-Frequency Heterodyned Detection of Picosecond Accumulated Photon Echoes

Highly sensitive detection of accumulated photon echoes was achieved by means of a high-frequency heterodyned method using a mode-locked CW dye laser. Experimental results on the modulation frequency dependence of the echo signal strength and also the excitation wavelength dependence of the echo decay curves in Nd:silicate glass are presented.

Custom Made Optical Pulses for Photon Echo Spectroscopy

Maaike T.W. Milder

Nonlinear optical techniques are widely used to study energy transport in nanoscale objects. In particular photon echo spectroscopy can be used to determine if the energy transport is coherent or not. In this project a novel phase sensitive nonlinear technique is proposed. The main feature of this technique is the application of two phase-locked pulses. The relative phase and the delay between the two pulses is set electronically by a pulse shaper based on a spatial light modulator (SLM). The use of an SLM ensures phase stability. The proposed method is tested on a model system of solutions of the dye molecule DTTCI in ethylene glycol and acetonitrile. The obtained results demonstrated that the parameters from the experimental data agree with those from previous studies. Hence, the proposed technique can be further developed for energy transport studies.

New coherent transient technique for femtosecond single-shot homogeneous spectrum measurement

Olavi Ollikainen, Jürgen Gallus, Urs P. Wild +1 more

Summary form only given. Coherent optical transients such as photon echo are a versatile method far measurement of the homogeneous absorption spectrum of molecular systems in the presence of strong inhomogeneous broadening. Such experiments require measurement of the decay of the optical coherence, typically accomplished by gradually varying the time delay between the excitation pulses. Time-domain information is then Fourier transformed to frequency domain by a computer. In this paper we demonstrate a new method that yields the homogeneous spectrum in a single shot of femtosecond laser pulse illumination by performing Fourier transformation of coherent optical transient signal with a lens. We apply this method to measure the homogeneous spectrum of dye molecules in a polymer film in a broad range of temperatures.

Coherence measurements with the two-photon Michelson interferometer

Dorilian Lopez-Mago, Lukáš Novotný

The interference of entangled photon pairs permits the study of the fundamental properties of quantum mechanics. The process is also finding practical applications in optical imaging. The Michelson interferometer provides an elegant means for characterizing the degree of two-photon entanglement, but the technique has not yet been described and analyzed in detail. Here we provide a full description of the interference of collinear down-converted photons in a Michelson interferometer. We explain the basic elements that characterize the interference pattern and complement the theory with experimental measurements. The two-photon Michelson interferometer can be used in quantum optical coherence tomography for dispersion-free imaging and localization.
