Abstract

A new quantum interferometric technique for measuring polarization mode dispersion with a higher precision than classical techniques is introduced. This approach simultaneously allows extracting chromatic and polarization mode dispersion parameters from a single optical setup.

High Resolution Measurement of Polarization Mode Dispersion in Discrete Telecom Devices using Quantum Interferometry

Andrew M. Fraine, Olga V. Minaeva, Roman I. Egorov +2 more

A quantum interferometric technique for measuring polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of commercial telecommunication wavelength selective switch (WSS) demonstrates advantages of quantum optical technology over conventional measurement. It provides greater precision than that of currently available commercial PMD characterization devices thus saving a great deal of networking hardware resources that must be allocated for PMD compensation in metropolitan networks.

Evaluation of Polarization Mode Dispersion and Chromatic Dispersion using Quantum Interferometry

Andrew M. Fraine, David S. Simon, Olga V. Minaeva +2 more

The use of quantum correlations between photons to measure polarization mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion is investigated. Two types of apparatus are discussed which use coincidence counting of entangled photon pairs to allow sub-femtosecond resolution for measurement of both PMD and chromatic dispersion, as well as separation of even-order and odd-order chromatic effects in the PMD. Group delays can be measured with a resolution of order 0.1 fs, whereas attosecond resolution can be achieved for phase delays.

We introduce spectrally-resolved quantum white-light interferometry exploiting energy-time entangled two-photon N00N-states for chromatic dispersion measurements. Compared to state-of-the-art approaches, we demonstrate 2.6 times enhanced precision, combined with absolute parameter determination.
