Effect of Electromagnetic Radiation on Nonideal Josephson Junctions

Alexander N. Lykov, I. A. Lykov

Abstract The method of numerical solution of equations is used within the resistive model to study the behavior of deviations of the current‒voltage characteristics of nonideal Josephson junctions from similar characteristics of ideal (standard) junctions. Nonideal Josephson junctions are those in which the current‒phase relation contains additional Josephson harmonics. The dependences of the amplitudes of current steps (Shapiro steps) on the power of external electromagnetic radiation is calculated. The shape of these dependences is shown to deviate from the corresponding dependences for ideal Josephson junctions. In addition, the paper examines the features of the occurrence of additional current steps on the current‒voltage characteristics of Josephson junctions and shows a possibility of their absence in the case of the presence of additional harmonics in the current‒phase relation. The obtained results prove that by analyzing the step structure of the current‒voltage characteristics it is possible to obtain information about the properties of Josephson junctions and superconductors that form them.

High-Frequency Properties of Y-Ba-Cu-O Josephson Junctions Fabricated with Helium Ion Beam Irradiation

Anthony Cortez, Ethan Y. Cho, Hao Li +3 more

We have fabricated spiral THz antennas containing embedded high TCYBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) focused helium ion beam Josephson junctions (JJ) for characterization of their high frequency characteristics. The values of the resistance and critical current of the junctions are controlled through the irradiation dose and geometry of the junction. We observe several orders of Shapiro steps in the current voltage characteristics of the device when irradiated with 0.6 THz and a single step when irradiated at 2.52 THz.

IF output characteristics of Josephson mixer

Keiichi Yamaguchi, Akira Kawaji, Katsumi Suzuki +2 more

The Josephson junction device is promising as a mixer for regions from millimeter wave to infrared. It is important to analyze Josephson devices to determine the circuit parameters and operating points of the circuits. However, it is difficult to analyze the mixer operation because of the nonlinear characteristic of the Josephson junction device. Therefore, small signal analysis has been conducted in characterizing the Josephson junction device. In this study, a detailed characterization of the IF output characteristic was obtained by introducing the concept of IF Shapiro steps. That is, it was determined that the minima that are not present in the local-oscillator Shapiro steps are present in the Josephson junction mixer output. In addition the impedance of the Josephson junction device was discussed and illustrated using a Smith chart. In this paper, the theoretical result was proved by a mixing experiment on the step-edge junction. As a result, the minima points in the IF output were confirmed. © 1997 Scripta Technica, Inc.
