Sharp Tunneling Peaks in a Parametric Oscillator: Quantum Resonances Missing in the Rotating Wave Approximation

Vittorio Peano, Michael Marthaler, M. I. Dykman

We describe a new mechanism of tunneling between period-two vibrational states of a weakly nonlinear, parametrically modulated oscillator. The tunneling results from resonant transitions induced by the fast oscillating terms conventionally disregarded in the rotating wave approximation (RWA). The tunneling amplitude displays resonant peaks as a function of the modulation frequency; near the maxima it is exponentially larger than the RWA tunneling amplitude.

Selective Addressing of High-Rank Atomic Polarization Moments

Valeriy V. Yashchuk, Dmitry Budker, Wojciech Gawlik +3 more

We describe a method of selective generation and study of polarization moments of up to the highest-rank kappa=2F possible for a quantum state with total angular momentum F. The technique is based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation with frequency-modulated light. Various polarization moments are distinguished by the periodicity of light-polarization rotation induced by the atoms during Larmor precession and exhibit distinct light-intensity and frequency dependences. We apply the method to study polarization moments of 87Rb atoms contained in a vapor cell with antirelaxation coating. Distinct ultranarrow (1-Hz wide) resonances, corresponding to different multipoles, appear in the magnetic-field dependence of the optical rotation. The use of the highest-multipole resonances supported by a given system has important applications in quantum and nonlinear optics and in magnetometry.

Nonlinear resonant magneto‐optical effects in alkaline metal vapors in the strong bichromatic laser radiation field

T. Ya. Karagodova, Anna V. Kuptsova

Abstract Results of computer simulations of the spectra of magneto‐optical rotation (MOR) of the polarization plane for both components of intense bichromatic laser radiation are presented. Dependences of MOR on light intensity and the external magnetic field strength have been investigated. The simulations are based on the theory and method published earlier. Our results coincide with experimental results known from literature. This suggests that new peculiarities of MOR in alkaline vapors obtained by computer simulations can be observed in the natural experiments. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J Quantum Chem, 2004
