Spontaneous parametric down-conversion using a pulse train

Abstract

The process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) is studied for the case in which the pump is a train of pulses. Effects of such a train of pulses (equivalent to a frequency comb) on degenerate collinear type-II SPDC and degenerate collinear type-I SPDC are analyzed using the probability of photon coincidence counts and compared with the case when the medium is pumped by a single pulse.

Theory of two-photon entanglement for spontaneous parametric down-conversion driven by a narrow pump pulse

Timothy E. Keller, Morton H. Rubin

Spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) has been extensively studied for the case of a continuous wave pump. In this paper SPDC is studied for the case in which the pump is a pulse. The pump pulse acts like a clock with an uncertainty equal to its width. This makes it possible to distinguish pairs of photons born at sufficiently different depths inside the crystal with a consequent decrease in two-photon interference. We study this effect in detail for degenerate collinear type-II SPDC and degenerate type-I SPDC. It may be possible in the type-II case to eliminate the clock effect of the pump by judicious choice of materials and wavelengths.

Gaussian modelling and Schmidt modes of SPDC biphoton states

Mikhail Vladimirovich Fedorov, J. M. Mikhailova, P. A. Volkov

A double-Gaussian model and the Schmidt modes are found for the biphoton wave function characterizing spontaneous parametric down-conversion with the degenerate collinear phase-matching of the type I and with a pulsed pump. The obtained results are valid for all durations of the pump pulses, short, long and intermediately long.

Collinear two-photon state with spectral properties of type-I and polarization properties of type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion: Preparation and testing

A. Burlakov, Maria V. Chekhova, O.A. Karabutova +1 more

Two beams of collinear type-I biphotons generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) from coherent pump beams are transformed without a loss into a state of correlated photons with orthogonal (in the general case, elliptical) polarizations. This alternative state manifests remarkable properties: while having the spectrum of type-I SPDC, it has polarization properties similar to type-II SPDC. To test the state, we use the anticorrelation effect (``anticorrelation dip'').

Spectral properties of entangled photons generated via type-I frequency-nondegenerate spontaneous parametric down-conversion

So-Young Baek, Yoon-Ho Kim

We report experimental and theoretical studies on the spectral properties of entangled photons of cw-pumped type-I frequency-nondegenerate SPDC. We find that the entangled-photon pair exhibits spectral and temporal features commonly associated with type-II SPDC.

Transverse spatial and frequency properties of two-photon states generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Alexandre Gutenberg da Costa Moura, W. A. T. Nogueira, Stephen Patrick Walborn +1 more

We present a detailed account of the two-photon states generated by SPDC in both type I and type II phase matching, including the effects of anisotropy of the nonlinear medium and the frequency spread of the down-converted fields. Accurate as well as simplified expressions are derived for type I and type II phase matching in the context of Fourier Optics. The main results are compared with experimental data available in the literature, showing good agreement in all cases.

Spectral and temporal properties of type-II parametric down-conversion: The impact of losses during state generation

Denis A. Kopylov, Michael Stefszky, Torsten Meier +2 more

In this paper, we theoretically study the spectral and temporal properties of pulsed spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) generated in lossy waveguides. Our theoretical approach is based on the formalism of Gaussian states and the Langevin equation, which is elaborated for weak parametric down-conversion and photon-number-unresolved click detection. Using the example of frequency-degenerate type-II SPDC generated under the pump-idler group-velocity-matching condition, we show how the joint-spectral intensity, mode structure, normalized second-order correlation function, and Hong-Ou-Mandel interference pattern depend on internal losses of the SPDC process. We found that the joint-spectral intensity is almost insensitive to internal losses, while the second-order correlation function shows a strong dependence on them, being different for the signal and idler beams in the presence of internal losses. Based on the sensitivity of the normalized second-order correlation function, we show how its measurement can be used to experimentally determine internal losses.
