Modulation of optical pulses under electromagnetically induced transparency conditions: transfer of the Rabi oscillations manifestation from the radiofrequency to the optical range

Abstract

In the semiclassical approximation, we have considered the propagation of a light pulse through a medium under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency and under the stationary action of a radiofrequency field that is resonant transitions between Zeeman sublevels. This action (a complicated version of Rabi oscillations under conditions of optical-radio-frequency double resonance) can ensure controllable amplitude-phase modulation of reproducible light pulses.

Variants of the light pulses controlling under conditions of double radio-optical resonance

A. S. Timofeev

On the bases of semi-classical theory of the laser light interaction with a cold atomic cloud, specifically, of the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT), repeated reproduction and modulation of the light pulses are investigated. A scheme of the light pulses control by the use of radio-frequency (RF) pulses is shown to be very effective. Short RF pulses of appropriate areas stimulate repeated playbacks of the output light pulses similar to the input one.

Dynamical control of pulse propagation in electromagnetically induced transparency

Martin Kiffner, Tarak Nath Dey

The influence of a phase-modulated control field on the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is investigated theoretically. We show that the phase modulation changes the dispersive properties of the medium considerably since it results in temporal oscillations of the transparency window in frequency space. This is in marked contrast to the standard EIT setup, where the transparency window is fixed and determined by the two-photon resonance condition. In particular, we find that the phase modulation enables the propagation of probe pulses with disjoint frequency spectra at different times and allows the shifting of the central frequency of a probe pulse almost without distortion of its shape. We employ the time-dependent susceptibility of the medium to explain and analyze our results and demonstrate that this concept yields qualitative as well as quantitative agreement with the numerical integration of Maxwell-Bloch equations. Our theoretical model can be applied to other media with time-dependent susceptibilities.

Electromagnetically Induced Transparency and Absorption of A Monochromatic Light Controlled by a Radio Frequency Field

Xunming Cai

Electromagnetically induced transparency and absorption of a monochromatic light controlled by a radio frequency field in the cold multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms are theoretically investigated. These Zeeman sublevels are coupled by a radio frequency (RF) field. Both electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption can be obtained by tuning the frequency of RF field for both the linear polarization and elliptical polarization monochromatic lights. When the transfer of coherence via spontaneous emission from the excited state to the ground state is considered, electromagnetically induced absorption can be changed into electromagnetically induced transparency with the change of intensity of radio field. The transparency windows controlled by the RF field can have potential applications in the magnetic-field measurement and quantum information processing.

Twofold light-pulse regeneration under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

A. S. Losev, A. S. Troshin

This paper shows that it is theoretically possible for a medium to generate two copies of an incoming probe pulse as a result of the successive action of two control pulses under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency. The medium is treated in the model of two-level atoms with threefold degeneration of the lower level (tripod configuration). The three laser-radiation pulses differ in polarization, and the propagation directions of the probe pulse and the two control pulses are orthogonal. The calculation uses a semiclassical approach, the slow-amplitude approximation, and the fixed-field approximation of the control pulses.

Phase modulation effects in the case of electromagnetically induced transparency

Oleg M. Parshkov, A E Dmitriev

The results of a theoretical investigation of the evolution of a probe pulse under electromagnetically induced transparency in the Λ -scheme of degenerated inhomogeneously broadened quantum transitions are presented. It supposed that the interacted light fields are elliptically polarized, and their influence on the medium can be either strictly resonant or quasiresonant. It is demonstrated that the probe pulse in the medium can be presented as the sum of two normal modes, i.e. quasi-monochromatic elliptically polarized fields propagating independently of each other. Due to the fact that velocities of normal mode pulses are different, a single probe pulse entering a medium splits into individual pulses inside of the medium, each of which transfers the energy of one of the normal modes. If normal modes are not phase modulated at the input surface, then in the case of quasi-resonance they become phase modulated during propagation in the medium, whereas this does not occur in the case of strict resonance. The total probe field, which is the sum of normal modes, has phase modulation before it splits into the mode pulses in cases of both strict resonance and quasi-resonance, even if it does not have it on the input surface.

Optical Linearity Leading to Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Two Level System

Joseph Jayarubi, A. John Peter

In the present work, the possibility of observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a two level system with the slow light propagation is investigated. The expression for the Rabi frequency is brought out within the rotating wave approximation and thereby it can be employed for the two level system in order to bring out the concepts of electromagnetically induced transparency in a two level system. The linear optical response of an atom with the resonant light in the medium is observed. The linear optical susceptibilities with the controlled field is found. The real part of the optical linearity leads to the refractive index of the medium.
