All-optical logic controlled-NOT, AND, and OR gates employing electro-optic effect in PPLN

By employing electro-optic Pockels effect of periodically poled lithium niobate, two optical signals with orthogonal linear polarization states can be switched between each other, which is a novel mechanism to demonstrate polarization-based binary all-optical logic functions, such as the basic controlled-NOT, AND and OR gates. By exploiting these basic gates with other XOR and XNOR gates realized in our previous experiment, complicated Boolean calculation should be expected.

Polarization-based all-optical logic controlled-NOT, XOR, and XNOR gates employing electro-optic effect in periodically poled lithium niobate

Yinxing Zhang, Yuping Chen, Xianfeng Chen

Based on electro-optic Pockels effect of periodically poled lithium niobate, different polarization-based binary all-optical logic functions: controlled-NOT, XOR, and XNOR gates were demonstrated by altering the linear polarization state of input optical signal about 90° on the polarization plant. Because the depletion of signal intensity in polarization-based logic gates is smaller than that of digital logic signal in intensity-based logic gates and almost negligible, this scheme has potential application in realizing complex logic functions by cascading several basic gates.

Ultralinear bistable electro-optic polarization modulator

Albert Feldman

An optical device utilizing optical feedback has been constructed with a Pockels cell and polarizing components. Two modes of operation of the device are demonstrated. Both modes exhibit optical bistability. It is demonstrated that in one mode of operation the nonlinear dependence of the output intensity as a function of an input optical or electrical signal can be made arbitrarily small compared to the linear dependence.

A single-photon polarization-frequency controlled-NOT gate

Hsuan‐Hao Lu, Joseph M. Lukens, Muneer Alshowkan +2 more

We develop a high-fidelity controlled-NOT gate between photonic polarization and frequency, leveraging direction-dependent electro-optic phase modulation in a fiber Sagnac loop. This design could facilitate massively parallelizable entanglement distillation with polarization-frequency resources in lightwave networks.

All-optical logic gates based on photoinduced anisotropy of bacteriorhodopsin film

Junhe Han, Baoli Yao, Peng Gao +2 more

All-optical logic gates based on photoinduced anisotropy of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) film are proposed. The photoinduced anisotropy in BR film, which arises from the selective absorption of BR molecules to polarized light, can be controlled by changing the amplitudes and polarizations of exiting beams. As a consequence, the polarization of the probe light passing through the BR film can be controlled by the polarization of the exiting beam. Based on this property, a novel scheme of all-optical logic gates, such as AND, OR, XOR and NOT, has been implemented via the pump-probe technique. A theoretical model for the all-optical logic gates is proposed, and the theoretical predictions are demonstrated with the experimental results.
