Abstract

The behavior of optical bistability (OB) in linear triple quantum dot molecules (QDMs) using double tunneling coupling by means of a unidirectional ring cavity is investigated. The linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of the system are also investigated. The double tunneling between the quantum dots can induce the interaction of double dark resonances, which can enhance the nonlinear response of the system. The type, the hysteresis loop, and the threshold of OB can be controlled by the intensity of the double tunneling and the detuning of the probe field. Our results give insights for future experiments and applications in optics using QDMs.

Control of optical bistability and third-order nonlinearity via tunneling induced quantum interference in triangular quantum dot molecules

Si-Cong Tian, Ren-Gang Wan, Cunzhu Tong +6 more

The optical bistability of a triangular quantum dot molecules embedded inside a unidirectional ring cavity is studied. The type, the threshold and the hysteresis loop of the optical bistability curves can be modified by the tunneling parameters, as well as the probe laser field. The linear and nonlinear susceptibilities of the medium are also studied to interpret the corresponding results. The physical interpretation is that the tunneling can induce the quantum interference, which modifies the linear and the nonlinear response of the medium. As a consequence, the characteristics of the optical bistability are changed. The scheme proposed here can be utilized for optimizing and controlling the optical switching process.

Phase and amplitude control of optical bistability in quantum dot molecules

We investigate the optical bistability (OB) behavior in a unidirectional ring cavity containing an asymmetric semiconductor double quantum dot (QD) system that forms a three-level V type system. We apply a probe and a coupling field to the system and it is shown that in the presence of inter-dot tunneling, the bistability of the system can be controlled by amplitude and relative phase of applied fields.

Controllable optical bistability in double quantum dot molecule

The optical bistability (OB) in the quantum dot molecules with four energy levels in a unidirectional ring cavity has been investigated. The authors find that the OB behaviour in the proposed system can be controlled by the system's different parameters such as electronic cooperation parameter, Rabi frequency of the two coupling laser field, decay rate, three frequency detuning, in which the parameters sensitivity is studied. The proposed system can be used for all optical switching and logic.

Switching on or off the optical bistability based on the interaction of double dark resonances

Xiang-an Yan, Liqiang Wang, Weiwei Zhang +2 more

We investigated the optical bistability (OB), which is manipulated by double dark resonances, in a [Formula: see text]-type four-level atomic system with a unidirectional ring cavity. It is found that, with the interaction of double dark resonances, the bistable threshold intensity becomes weaker and the hysteresis loop becomes narrower by tuning properly the detuning of microwave field. Also, the influence of the intensity and frequency detuning of the microwave field on switching on or off the optical bistable behavior is studied, which is used to provide the theoretical guidance for controlling and optimizing all optical switching process. Our numerical results are explained by using a dressed-state approach.

Giant Kerr nonlinearity induced by tunneling in triple quantum dot molecules

Si-Cong Tian, Ren-Gang Wan, Cunzhu Tong +3 more

A scheme for giant enhancement of the Kerr nonlinearity in linear triple quantum dot molecules is proposed. In such a system, the tunneling-induced transparency window obtained in double quantum dot molecules splits into two windows, due to the coupling with the third quantum dot. And most important, the Kerr nonlinearity can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude, compared with that generated in double quantum dot molecules. With proper detuning of the tunneling, giant Kerr nonlinearity accompanied by vanishing absorption can be realized, which opens the possibility to enhance self-phase modulation in tunneling controllable semiconductor nanostructures under conditions of low light levels. Quantitative analysis shows that the giant Kerr nonlinearity is attributed to the interacting double dark resonances induced by the tunneling between the triple quantum dots, therefore no extra laser fields are required.

Behavior of optical bistability in multifold quantum dot molecules

Hamid Reza Hamedi, Mohammad Reza Mehmannavaz

We analyze the optical bistability (OB) behavior in a multifold quantum dot (QD) molecule composed of five quantum dots controlled by the tunneling coupling. It is shown that the optical bistability can strongly be affected by the tunneling inter-dot coupling coefficients as well as detuning parameters. In addition, we find that the rate of an incoherent pump field has a leading role in modification of the OB threshold. We then generalize our analysis to the case of multifold quantum dot molecules where the number of the quantum dots is N (with a center dot and satellite dots). We compare the OB features that could occur in a multifold QD system consist of three ( ), four ( ), and five ( N = 5) quantum dots. We realize that the OB threshold increases as the number of satellite QDs increases. Such controllable optical bistability in multiple QD molecules may provide some new possibilities for technological applications in optoelectronics and solid-state quantum information science.
