Detecting topological phase transition in 1D superconducting systems with next nearest neighbor hopping

Abstract

We investigate the effect of next-nearest-neighbor hopping on topological quantum phase transitions (QPTs) that are characterized by the number of Majorana zero modes in one-dimensional (1D) p-wave superconducting systems. We also numerically analyze the scaling behavior and the universality of the Berry phase (BP) of the ground state close to the critical point. For critical line (I), the derivative of the ground-state BP is nonanalytic at the phase boundaries. For the phase boundary (II), a noncontractible BP of the ground state itself is also a witness of quantum phase transition.

Scaling of geometric phases close to the topological quantum phase transition in Kitaev's quantum wire model

Chuan-Jia Shan, Jin-Xin Li, W. W. Cheng +2 more

We present a unified study of the topological quantum phase transition in Kitaev's 1D p-wave spinless quantum wire model in terms of its ground state geometric phase (GP). We also analyze zero-temperature and finite-temperature scaling parameters, extracted from the GP near the critical point. The derivative of the ground-state GP is nonanalytic at the phase boundary. A finite-size scaling and finite-temperature scaling analysis are carried out and, furthermore, the scaling behavior and universality are verified numerically.

Survival probability in a quenched Majorana chain with an impurity

Atanu Rajak, Tanay Nag

We investigate the dynamics of a one-dimensional p-wave superconductor with next-nearest-neighbor hopping and superconducting interaction derived from a three-spin interacting Ising model in transverse field by mapping to Majorana fermions. The next-nearest-neighbor hopping term leads to a new topological phase containing two zero-energy Majorana modes at each end of an open chain, compared to a nearest-neighbor p-wave superconducting chain. We study the Majorana survival probability (MSP) of a particular Majorana edge state when the initial Hamiltonian (H_{i}) is changed to the quantum critical as well as off-critical final Hamiltonian (H_{f}), which additionally contains an impurity term (H_{imp}) that breaks the time-reversal invariance. For the off-critical quenching inside the new topological phase with H_{f}=H_{i}+H_{imp}, and small impurity strength (λ_{d}), we observe a perfect oscillation of the MSP as a function of time with a single frequency (determined by the impurity strength λ_{d}) that can be analyzed from an equivalent two-level problem. On the other hand, the MSP shows a beating like structure with time for quenching to the phase boundary separating the topological phase (with two edge Majoranas at each edge) and the nontopological phase where the additional frequency is given by inverse of the system size. We attribute this behavior of the MSP to the modification of the energy levels of the final Hamiltonian due to the application of the impurity term.

Topological phase transitions driven by real next-nearest-neighbor hopping in cold fermi gases

R. Wang, Y.F. Zhang, C.X. Zhang

The strength t′ of the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hopping in most realized square optical lattices is much smaller than that of the nearest-neighbor hopping, and is usually seen as zero. Recently, both experimental and theoretical works have shown that the magnitude of the NNN hopping can be tuned in a wide range by shaking the optical lattice. In this paper, we study the effect of the real NNN term on topological phase transitions of the cold fermi gases in a two-dimensional square anisotropic optical lattice. We investigate the gapless condition of the system and the topological phase symbolized by the TKNN number. For the real NNN hopping, there exists a critical point tc′ as a function of μ, when 0<t′<tc′, there are only non-Abelian topological phases which are indicted by an odd TKNN number, and when t′>tc′ , the Abelian topological phase appears and the zone of the phase will be widened with the increase of t′. By numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian in the real space, the corresponding edge states for different topological phase and Majorana zero modes are discussed.

Majorana Zero Modes and Bulk-Boundary Correspondence at Quantum Criticality

S Rahul, Ravi Kumar, Y R Kartik +1 more

Majorana zero modes are well studied in the gapped phases of topological systems. We investigate Majorana zero modes at the topological quantum criticality in one dimensional topological superconducting model with longer range interaction. We identify stable localized Majorana zero modes appearing at criticality under certain conditions. Topological invariant number for these non-trivial criticalities is obtained from zeros of a complex function associated with the Hamiltonian. Behavior of parametric curve at criticalities validate the invariant obtained and account for the appearance of Majorana zero modes at criticality. Trivial and non-trivial topological nature of criticality due to the presence of multicritical point cause an unusual topological transition along the critical line. We observe and investigate this unique transition in terms of eigenvalue spectrum. Appearance of MZMs at criticality demands integer value of topological invariant number in order to validate the concept of bulk-boundary correspondence. Hence we propose a scheme to separate the invariant number into fractional and integer contribution to establish bulk-boundary correspondence at criticality.

Topological phase transitions driven by next-nearest-neighbor hopping in noncentrosymmetric cold Fermi gases

Rui Wang, Cunxi Zhang, Ji Qing-Shan

We investigate the topological phase marked by the Thouless–Kohmoto–Nightingale–Nijs (TKNN) number and the phase transitions driven by the next nearest neighbor (NNN) hopping in noncentrosymmetric cold Fermi gases, both spin-singlet pairing and spin-triplet pairing are considered. There exists a critical for the NNN hopping, at which the quantum phase transition occurs, and the system changes from an Abelian (non-Abelian) phase to a non-Abelian (Abelian) one. By numerically diagonalizing the Hamiltonian in the real space, the energy spectra with edge states for different topological phases and the Majorana zero modes are discussed. Although the spin-triplet pairing does not contribute to the gap closing and the phase diagram, it induces gapless states in the presence of a magnetic field, and the TKNN number in this region is still zero.

Topological Superconductivity and Majorana Fermions

Henrik S. Røising

This thesis is devoted to the topic of one- and two-dimensional models of topological superconductivity. We study the Kitaev chain subject to closed and open boundary conditions. In the closed chain, we derive the energy spectrum, the ground state, and the topological invariant viewed as a certain Berry phase. We study two-point correlation functions and find enlarged values close to the topological phase transitions. The open chain is studied with focus on describing the degenerate ground states for a simple parameter choice in the topological phase. Then, the open system Hamiltonian is diagonalized numerically, and we model the order parameter with a spatial dependency. Additional Majorana zero modes appear if the order parameter changes sign. We also consider the p+ip model. The localization of a Majorana zero mode, bound to a vortex that is described by Ginzburg-Landau theory, is found numerically. We propose an argument that results in a non-Abelian exchange transformation for a system of several vortices. The p+ip model is also studied on an annulus; we approximate the ground state as a combination of boundary states and calculate its energy. The results are compared to a numerical implementation, and the agreement is convincing as the boundary separation becomes large compared to other length scales.
