Abstract

Based on the newly found representation in which the phase operator corresponding to Shapiro-Wagner phase measurement scheme manifestly exhibits its phase behavior, we construct the phase probability density function in the two-mode Fock space, which provides an alternative approach for analysing the phase properties of optical fields.

TWO-MODE PHASE-STATE REPRESENTATIONS IN QUANTUM OPTICS

Hong-Yi Fan, Xian-Ting Liang, Zhihu Sun

A phase state presentation |ξ= reiθ> for a two-mode light field is constructed in the context of quantum optics. This phase space formalism is directly connected to phase-related operators. The generalized quasi-probability distribution function Q(ξ) and measurable phase probability distribution function P(θ) are constructed and are useful to obtain information about phase properties of light fields.

Quantum optical phase

David Thomas Pegg, Stephen Mark Barnett

The phase associated with a single mode of the electromagnetic field is complementary to the photon number. This simple idea leads us to construct a probability density for the phase. The phase operator cannot be represented exactly in the usual-infinite Hilbert space but can be constructed in a subspace of it and provides a valid representation of phase if used together with a suitable limiting procedure. We introduce the Hermitian optical phase operator and describe some of its most important properties. We also provide brief discussions of some alternative approaches to the phase problem and to the question of phase measurements. The paper concludes with an extensive bibliography.

Phase Properties of Two-Mode Squeezing-Rotating Entangled Representation

Yuan Hong-Chun, Heng-Mei Li, Qi Kai-Guo

By virtue of the squeezing-rotating entangled representation, we mainly establish the new two-mode phase operator and phase angle operator, which is a general form including the foregoing formalist in two-mode Fock space. In addition, the corresponding phase distribution function is given in the entangled representation. In terms of this definition, we also analyze the phase behavior of some simple two-mode states such as squeezing-rotating coherent state, squeezing-rotating vacuum state, and so on. It is found that the results exactly agree with the foregoing phase theory.

Limiting Procedures for the Optical Phase Operator

Stephen Mark Barnett, David Thomas Pegg

We examine some of the attempts to describe the phase of a single field mode by a quantum operator acting in the conventional infinite Hilbert space. These operators lead to bizarre properties such as non-random phases for the number states and experience consistency difficulties when used to obtain a phase probability density. Moreover, in these approaches operator functions of phase are not simply functions of a phase operator. We show that these peculiarities do not arise when the Hermitian optical phase operator is employed. In our opinion, the problems associated with the descriptions of phase in conventional infinite Hilbert space arise from the nature of the limiting process.

Phase-state representation in quantum optics

Constantin Brif, Y. Ben-Aryeh

A phase space for the single-mode light field is constructed by using optical phase variables. This phase-space formalism is directly connected to optical-phase-related operators. The phase-state basis \ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\theta}〉 is used to represent various quantum operators and states. Properties of the density operator \ensuremath{\rho}^ phase-state matrix elements P(\ensuremath{\theta},\ensuremath{\theta}')=〈\ensuremath{\theta}\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\rho}^\ensuremath{\Vert}\ensuremath{\theta}'〉 and their relations to phase-related quasiprobability distributions are discussed. By using the phase representation, different types of number-phase intelligent states are analyzed.

Fock representation for two-mode quantum phase operators' eigenstates

Hong-Yi Fan, Min Xiao

The quantum phase description of Noh, Fougères and Mandel (NFM) leads to a two-mode theory of phase in the strong local oscillator limit. We show that the explicit form of the eigenstates of the sine and the cosine phase operators in two-mode Fock space can be constructed. This brings great convenience to the NFM quantum phase approach.
