Low field linear Stark effect on quasi-hydrogenic caesium series

Abstract

We present the experimental evidence of the linear Stark behaviour in an atomic spectrum at low (absolute) electric field strengths on high lying quasi-hydrogenic series of atomic caesium. This is the behaviour which would be observed on hydrogen atoms for any level. It is exhibited here in the 1-15 V/cm range on quasi-hydrogenic atoms, excited, in vapour phase, by a c.w. dye laser to n = 60 Rydberg states. Under these conditions, the core effects are almost negligible compared with the first linear-in-field term in the Stark expansion of the energy.

Landau condensation of the quasi-hydrogenic spectrum of caesium

J. C. Gay, Dominique Delande, F. Biraben

Landau condensation of the M=+or-3, odd-parity, quasi-hydrogenic caesium spectra is investigated for fields up to 8 T and for energies ranging +or-120 cm -1 around the threshold. Continuous single-mode dye laser excitation is used. A dominant series of sharp discrete lines is shown to follow the semiclassical predictions from the Landau to the diamagnetic Coulomb regimes where the lines branch to well defined states of the hydrogenic manifolds. For this highly hydrogenic spectrum, the spacing of the resonances near the threshold is shown to be 1.5 h(cross) omega c .

The potential model investigation of Stark effect in caesium Rydberg state atoms and comparison with experiment

Zhengfa Hu, Zhao Hong-tai, Zhou Shi-Kang +2 more

The potential model method for computation of Stark structure of Cs Rydberg states atoms and oscillator strength is described, for external electric fields varying from 0 to 600V/cm. Anticrossing, l -mixing and n -mixing phenomena are observed clearly from the map of Stark. Corresponding experiment is performed under the same condition, and the two results are in good agreement with each other within the experimental uncertainty.

Study of non-hydrogenic near degeneracies between m sublevels in the linear Stark effect of sodium Rydberg states

Claude Fabre, Y. Kaluzny, R. Calabrese +3 more

The authors have studied the linear Stark effect of sodium Rydberg states by subDoppler high resolution spectroscopy using a continuous stepwise excitation of sodium atoms (3S to 3P to 3D to nF) with the help of a CW dye laser and of two single-mode diode lasers. They have shown a quasidegeneracy of m=0, mod m mod =1 and mod m mod =2 states, revealing an unexpected non-hydrogenic behaviour of Stark states in this linear regime. A simple model, based on a 'truncated Stark basis' approach accounts for this feature, which is common to all alkali atom Rydberg states.

ION DETECTION TECHNIQUES APPLIED TO RYDBERG ATOMS IN EXTERNAL FIELDS

Francis Jean Penent, Christian Chardonnet, Dominique Delande +2 more

The simultaneous development of single mode c.w. dye laser excitation and thermoionic detection over the last five years has supplied with one of the most powerful experimental technique for atomic physics studies under vapour phase conditions. One of the most interesting application concerns problems of fundamental physics which can be tackled on Rydberg atoms especially the ones dealing with the atomic properties in external fields. Several selected examples are discussed to the light of generalized vectorial models of diamagnetism, linear Stark effect and crossed electric and magnetic fields effects. Although the experimental results are highly illustrative of the pure hydrogenic behaviour in external fields, none of them have been obtained on the hydrogen atom itself.

ELECTRIC FIELD EFFECTS ON Sr ATOM RYDBERG STATES

Iu J

Stark structure of Sr atom Rydberg states in the vicinity of n = 12 and n = 13 were me-asured by multistep excitation method with ππ polarized lasers. The Stark map exhibited the linear behaviour of Stark manifold of Sr atom in low electric field. The crossing and antic-rossing structure of levels, which depends on the quantum effects, were discussed.
