Abstract

Stark structure of Sr atom Rydberg states in the vicinity of n = 12 and n = 13 were me-asured by multistep excitation method with ππ polarized lasers. The Stark map exhibited the linear behaviour of Stark manifold of Sr atom in low electric field. The crossing and antic-rossing structure of levels, which depends on the quantum effects, were discussed.

LEVEL STRUCTURE OF THE RYDBERG STATES OF CALCIUM ATOM IN ELECTRIC FIELD

Sen Zhang, QIU JI-ZHEN, WANG GANG +1 more

The Stark spectrum of Ca atom with m = 0 in the vicinity of n = 10 to n = 13 have been obtained by using two-step excitation and photoionization methods in the applied electric field from 0 to 8 kV/cm. The experimental results show that the 3d2 3P0 and 3d2 3P2 valence states are repelled by n= 12 Stark manifold. The interaction among the zero-field non-degenerate states, valence states and Stark states are discussed. The interference phenomenon, in which valence state and Stark states take part, has been observed. The interference is enhanced when the electric field increase.

Stark structure in Rydberg states of xenon

Randall D. Knight, Liangguo Wang

We have studied the Stark effect for the bound Rydberg states of xenon ${(}^{2}$${\mathrm{P}}_{3/2}$ core) in the vicinity of n=17. These are the first detailed measurements of Rydberg-state Stark structure in a heavy rare-gas atom. The experiment was performed by one-photon laser spectroscopy from the metastable 6s'${[(1/2)]}_{0}$ state in an atomic beam. Laser polarization can be chosen to excite pure M=0 or \ensuremath{\Vert}M\ensuremath{\Vert}=1 levels. Stark maps are presented for electric fields from 0 to 2000 V/cm. The major low-field features are a prominent linear manifold for states with l\ensuremath{\ge}3 and an isolated group of states arising from mixing within the overlapping p and d terms. A simple model of the p,d complex, showing strong mixing at fields as low as 200 V/cm, is used to correlate observed states with the zero-field states. The spectra become exceedingly complex for fields greater than 1000 V/cm because of mixing within the extensive fine structure of xenon.

Stark structure of the Rydberg states of alkaline-earth atoms

Zhi Miao-chan, Dai Chang-Jian, Shiben Li

The Stark effects of the Rydberg states in the alkaline-earth atoms are studied theoretically. Using a method similar to the treatment of alkali atoms, the properties of the Stark states of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba atoms in the regions far away from the perturbers are investigated. The Stark maps for Mg ( n = 16, M = 0), Ca ( n = 10, M = 0), Sr ( n = 12, M = 0) and Ba ( n = 13, | M | = 0, 1) are presented. Topics such as the general methods of calculation, the treatment of fine structure and the structure of level anti-crossings are discussed. The comparison between the theoretical and experimental Stark maps is satisfactory.

Structure of Sodium Rydberg States in Weak to Strong Electric Fields

We present results of an experimental survey of the $n=15$ state of Na in electric fields from 0 to 4 kV/cm. Both linear and higher-order Stark effects play important roles. States with low $|m|$ show marked differences from hydrogenic behavior, particularly in the vicinity of level crossings. Computed values for the energy levels are in good agreement with the data. The experimental method provides a simple technique for populating selected Stark or angular momentum levels of a Rydberg state.

Field Ionization Thresholds of (17,n1,n2, 0) and (17,n1,n2, 1) Stark States of Sr Atom

Jing Li, Sen Zhang, Xiaofeng Chu

The field ionization thresholds of n =17,| m |=0, 1 Stark states of Sr atoms have been investigated by two-step excitation using ππ , πσ polarized lasers and both uniform and pulse electric fields. The results showed, contrary to the hydrogen's, higher-energy states generally have lower ionization thresholds, and that the| m |=0, 1 Sr atoms exhibit partly adiabatic behavior at several avoided crossings in the passage to ionization.
