Abstract

In this paper, we investigate simultaneous 853 nm + 1533 nm amplification, and wavelength conversion between 1533 nm and 853 nm in Er3+-doped fluoride fiber. Based on our simulation results, simultaneous 853 nm (4S3/2→4I13/2 transition) + 1533 nm (4I13/2→4I15/2 transition) amplification, and wavelength conversion between 1533 nm and 853 nm can be realized in Er3+-doped fluoride fibers with the excitation of a 974 nm laser diode, respectively. Furthermore, we investigate the interactions between 853 nm and 1533 nm amplifications, and discuss their effects on simultaneously 853 nm + 1533 nm amplifier. The crosstalk between 853 nm and 1533 nm signals is very weak because of relatively long lifetime (~10 ms) of the 4I13/2 level. By introducing a cavity for 853 nm or 1533 nm lasing into the system, the possibility of wavelength conversion from 1533 nm to 853 nm or from 853 nm to 1533 nm in Er3+-doped fluoride fiber excited at 974 nm is clarified, which can be used as the wavelength converter or optical switch between public (the third window: ~1533 nm) and local (the first window: ~853 nm) networks in future networks.

Rare-earth doped fiber amplifiers for the first telecommunication window

Balakrishnan Sridhar

A complete experimental and theoretical study of rare earth doped fiber-optic amplifiers for the first tele-communication window has been made. The thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifier is shown to provide amplification in the 800nm-820nm signal region. A complete steady state theoretical model has been presented and the model has been experimentally verified. The model predicts the gain, noise figure and the amplified spontaneous emission in the 800nm, 1470nm, 1900nm and 2300nm bands. The effect of population trapping at the $\\sp3F\\sb4$ energy level of thulium ion is also shown with the help of the model. It has been shown that about 5-15%o of the population is trapped at the $\\sp3F\\sb4$ energy level. We have also shown theoretically, the expected gain and noise performance of Thulium doped fluoride fiber amplifiers pumped in the 680nm absorption band. The maximum gain at 806nm is slightly lower than with comparable 780 nm pumping. The gain bandwidth is however found to increase with 680nm pumping. The higher ASE at shorter wavelengths ($<$806nm) reduces the gain at the peak wavelength (806nm). This is a result of the better inversion with three level pumping at 680nm as compared to two level resonant pumping at 780nm. We report an efficient single mode erbium doped flouride fiber amplifier in the 850nm signal band for the first time. The amplification is through an up-conversion process. The erbium doped flouride fiber amplifier was pumped with an estimated pump power of 35mW at 792nm. We have also considered a theoretical model for a single mode erbium doped fluoride fiber amplifier. Efficient amplification occurs because of the strong excited state absorption at the pump wavelength from the $\\sp4I\\sb{13/2}$ energy level.

Excited-state absorption in erbium-doped silica fiber with simultaneous excitation at 977 and 1531 nm

We report a study of the excited-state absorption (ESA) in erbium-doped silica fiber (EDF) pumped at 977 nm, when the fiber is simultaneously excited by signal radiation at 1531 nm. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that ESA efficiency at 977 nm gets strongly enhanced only in the presence of signal power. Experimentally, this conclusion is supported through the detection of upconversion emission, a “fingerprint” of the ESA process, and through the measurements of the EDF nonlinear transmission coefficient for the pump wavelength, which is sensitive to the ESA value. It is shown that the experimental data are precisely modeled with an advanced five-level Er3+ model developed for the EDF.

Optical amplification in Er3+-doped transparent Ba2NaNb5O15 single crystal at 850 nm

Patricia Haro‐González, Inocencio Rafael Martin, F.J. Lahoz +3 more

Positive optical gain around 5 cm−1 (∼21 dB/cm) has been observed in Er3+-doped Ba2NaNb5O15 single crystal using a pump and probe experimental setup. High power laser pulses at 532 nm have been used as the pump source in order to strongly populate the S43/2(H211/2) levels of the Er3+ ions due to ground state absorption. Low signal beam cw laser radiation at 850 nm has been used as the probe beam to stimulate the emission associated with the S43/2(H211/2)→I413/2 electronic transition of the Er3+ ions. The process has been modelized as a four level system, and its population has been analyzed and simulated in order to study the gain dynamics. Optical amplification of the probe signal has been observed during the first 60 μs, which represents a good agreement between the measured lifetime of the S43/2(H211/2) levels and the reported simulation.

Optical switching effects using excited state absorption of Er3+ ‐doped fibers

Yoshinobu Maeda, Masatoshi Migitaka

Abstract When a 787‐nm signal light with constant optical intensity is superimposed with a control light of the same wavelength in an Er‐doped optical fiber, optical switchoff occurs. The optical intensity of the control light for switch‐off is 1.4 and 25 W/cm2. As the optical intensity increases, the optical transmission of the fiber decreases. When the optical intensity is 25 W/cm2, the optical transmission is lowest. A numerical analysis based on the four‐level double absorption model indicates that this nonlinear transmission characteristic takes place because the excited absorption due to the 2H11/2‐4I13/2 transition of Er3+ is predominating in the 4I9/24I15/2 and 2H11/2‐4H13/2 double absorptions. The optical switch‐off phenomenon is regarded as the first‐order phase transition phenomenon due to complex saturable absorbers with negative optical intensity dependence in optical transmission.

Modulation of absorption and refractive index in Er3+-doped fibers

Carsten Thirstrup, Yuan Shi, Per Bækkelund +1 more

Modulation of the absorption and refractive index in Er3+-doped fibers for a signal wavelength in the 1550-nm band and a pump wavelength of 980 nm is investigated. The experimental results are compared with a model that takes into account optical transitions between the ground state and the metastable state in Er3+. Good agreement between the experiment and the model is obtained apart from a wavelength-independent constant in the refractive index modulation, which is discussed.

Tunable optical delay with low intensity loss in a cascade structure Er3+-doped optical fiber amplifier

Yuan Gao, Wei Qiu, Yuqi Wu +4 more

In this paper, we propose a new pumping scheme—a dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber based on the theory of coherent population oscillation. While realizing slow light transmission, the loss of output signal light power is reduced. Using numerical simulation, we compare the effects of a single fiber without pumping, a 980 nm single pumping single fiber, and a dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber on signal light intensity loss coefficient τ and maximum time delay with the increase of input signal light power. The results show that the signal light intensity loss coefficient τ of the three structures decreases gradually with the increase of input signal light power. However, the transmission of lower signal light intensity loss coefficient τ=0.0823 and a larger time delay of 0.15 ms can be obtained under the dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber. On the basis of the dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber, the signal light intensity loss coefficient τ decreases gradually with the increase of pump ratio M (M=P1480∶P980) and the decrease of length ratio N (N=L2∶L1; L1 and L2 represent the length of the first and second cascaded optical fibers, respectively). Moreover, we compare the effects of ion density of the Er3+-doped optical fiber on the time delay of three structures. The dual-frequency laser-pumped cascade structure of Er3+-doped optical fiber can provide a larger time delay and smaller signal light intensity loss coefficient τ at low ion density of the Er3+-doped optical fiber.
