Abstract I review popular definitions of elementary particles and argue that their description as excitations of quantum fields has its place in an introductory course on quantum mechanics at universities and can be further simplified to satisfy curiosity of motivated high school students.

Elements of quantum mechanics for space radiation

James S. Welsh

Electromagnetic radiation and high-energy electrons exhibit behaviors that require an understanding of the elementary quantum concept of the wave-particle duality. Other selected, relevant topics in quantum mechanics such as the tunnel effect, the uncertainty principle, the exclusion principle, atomic structure, and blackbody radiation are also briefly reviewed here. Students who are already familiar with quantum mechanics may elect to bypass this section. On the other hand, those who are not yet acquainted with these concepts may benefit from this review, perhaps even before delving into chapters 5 and 6.
