Abstract

In this paper we report an observation of the two-photon absorption in a four-level system in hot $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ vapor based on the proposal of Harris and Yamamoto [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 3611 (1998)]. We show that this effect is reduced in hot atoms due to the non-Doppler-free nature of this scheme. Then we report a phenomenon that could be used in the same application of Harris and Yamamoto. The main result is a great enhancement of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect in hot $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ vapor caused by optical pumping. We find that when the single photon detuning is near zero the EIT signal is dramatically enhanced by an optical pumping field. More interestingly when the single photon detuning is larger the signal can be changed from a sharp Raman peak to a sharp EIT dip. The full width at half maximum of the peak and dip are narrow and subnatural.

Sub-Doppler absorption narrowing in atomic vapor at two intense laser fields

Aleksandar J. Krmpot, Marina M. Mijailovi, Bratimir M. Pani? +4 more

We have experimentally studied electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and absorption (EIA) in hot 85Rb atomic vapor using probe and coupling light with comparable power levels. We have shown that strong-probe EIT has different linewidth and appears in fewer configurations than does usual, weak probe EIT. In V-scheme, where optical pumping and saturation are dominant mechanisms, narrow EIT is possible only when a probe is tuned to a closed transition. The width of the EIT resonance increases with laser intensity with non-linear dependence, similar to the weak-probe EIT in Lambda- scheme. The EIT in Lambda- scheme was observed when two transitions had balanced population losses. The EIA was modified for the case of a strong probe as well: in four-level N-scheme with Zeeman sublevels the EIA was observed only for a cycling transition when F'=F+1, where F and F' are the angular momenta of the 5 2S1/2 (ground) and 5 2P3/2 (excited) state hyper-fine levels, respectively. The combination of strong probe and strong coupling laser beam intensities allows observation of an absorption dip due to three-photon resonance in a four-level scheme that involves the Raman transitions via virtual level.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in a thin vapor film

David Petrosyan, Yu. P. Malakyan

We examine the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency in a thin cell filled with a vapor of three-level $\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ atoms. We show that the absorption spectrum of the probe field and the fluorescence signal from the upper atomic level contain two sub-Doppler dips that have considerably different widths. The narrow dip corresponds to the effect of electromagnetically induced transparency, whereas the broader one results from the optical pumping of the external atomic states. Under the condition of exact resonance of the coupling field with the corresponding atomic transition, these two dips are superimposed on the frequency scale, while in the case of nonzero detuning of the coupling field, the two dips are shifted with respect to each other, which makes it possible to observe a competition between the two effects. In the frequency region where the absorption is low, large optical nonlinearities conditioned merely by the slow atoms having an effective 1 mK temperature are also found.

Intensity-dependent effects on four-wave mixing based on electromagnetically induced transparency

Gang Wang, Lin Cen, Yi Qu +3 more

We extend the study on a four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme of contiuous-wave lasers in a hot rubidium vapor when the probe and coupling fields work in the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) regime while the pump and signal fields work in the two-photon Raman regime. Our experimental results show that the generated signal field is well contained in an EIT dip of the incident probe field as a result of efficient FWM. We find, in particular, that an optimal FWM process can only be attained when the coupling and pump fields are well matched in intensity. If the probe intensity is far beyond the EIT condition, however, the nonlinear efficiency of energy transfer from the probe field to the signal field will be greatly reduced.

Observation of a three-photon electromagnetically induced transparency in hot atomic vapor

Alexander S. Zibrov, C. Y. Ye, Yuri V. Rostovtsev +2 more

We demonstrate experimentally the effect of a three-photon electromagnetically induced transparency in hot ${}^{85}\mathrm{Rb}$ atomic vapor driven by two coherent electromagnetic fields. The narrow transparency window is observed on the background of high-contrast Doppler-free subnatural absorption resonance. Our analytical calculations and numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental data. Both the transparency and the absorption resonances can find applications in high-precision metrology.

Observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in six-level Rb atoms and theoretical simulation of the observed spectra

Dipankar Bhattacharyya, Arindam Ghosh, Amitava Bandyopadhyay +2 more

Abstract We report the observation of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a six-level Λ -type system in atomic Rb vapor containing both 87 Rb and 85 Rb. The experimental observation includes five velocity selective optically pumped (VSOP) absorption dips for both 87 Rb and 85 Rb. The EIT signal appears on the background of one such VSOP absorption dips. The measured EIT linewidth ( ) shows sub-natural ( ) values for both lower and higher values of pump Rabi-frequencies. The density matrix based theoretical model for the six-level system is developed and solved numerically by taking into account the Doppler broadening. A complete analytical solution (non perturbative) for a three level Λ -type system has been obtained and compared with the experimentally observed sub-natural EIT linewidth. The simulated spectra are in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Two electromagnetically induced transparency windows and an enhanced electromagnetically induced transparency signal in a four-level tripod atomic system

Shujing Li, Xudong Yang, Xuemin Cao +2 more

We present the experimental observations and theoretical calculations of two electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows and an enhanced EIT signal in a four-level tripod system of D1 line of 87 Rb atoms. The two EIT dips produced by a strong coupling beam and a weak trigger beam were observed in the absorption spectrum of probe field, when the frequency detuning of the trigger beam was different from that of the coupling beam. When the frequency detuning of the trigger beam was near or equal to that of the coupling beam, the total depth of the EIT dip created by the coupling beam clearly became larger. The experimental measurements were in agreement with theoretical calculations.
