Coherent Raman scattering on light-induced optical gratings prepared by adiabatic population transfer

Abstract

We investigate theoretically a process of coherent Raman scattering in a medium where the coherence between two low- energetic levels is presented by adiabatic population transfer. In the present case the light induced moving optical grating can be formed by a periodical sequence of solitary-type waves (adiabatons). The parameters of this grating (propagation velocity, coefficients of spatial Fourier decomposition) are controlled completely by the amplitudes and phases of the two coupling fields at the medium entrance.

Coherent control of light-pulse propagation in a Raman induced grating

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, S. A. Myslivets

Abstract We study light-pulse propagation in a dynamically controllable periodic structure (grating) resulting from Raman interaction of a weak probe pulse with a standing-wave pump and a second control laser field in N-type four-level atomic media. The grating is induced due to periodic spatial modulation of the Raman gain in a standing pump field (Raman gain grating). We show that it is possible to control both the probe pulse amplitude and the group velocity of the pulse from subluminal to superluminal by varying the pump or control field. Such a grating is of interest for all-optical switches and transistors.

Raman-induced gratings in atomic media

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, S. A. Myslivets

A novel type of electromagnetically induced gratings based on the Raman nonlinearity in the field of standing pump waves are proposed. Unlike electromagnetically induced absorption gratings, these gratings are based on the spatial modulation of Raman susceptibility. We present a theoretical study of the optical response of such a spatial periodically modulated three-level atomic medium. It is shown that transmission and reflection of a probe Raman wave can be simultaneously amplified in the grating. Transmission and reflection spectra can be controlled by varying the pump field intensity. The basic mechanism responsible for all-optical control of transmission and reflection in the samples of Raman driven atoms are discussed.

Optically Tunable Gratings Based on Coherent Population Oscillation

Xiaojun Zhang, Hai-Hua Wang, Lei Wang +1 more

We theoretically study the optically tunable gratings based on a L-type atomic medium using coherent population oscillations from the angle of reflection and transmission of the probe field. Adopting a standing-wave driving field, the refractive index of the medium as well as the absorption are periodically modified. Consequently, the Bragg scattering causes the effective reflection. We show that different intensities of the control field lead to three types of reflection profile which actually correspond to different absorption/amplification features of the medium. We present a detailed analyses about the influence of amplification on the reflection profile as well. The coherent population oscillation is robust to the dephasing effect, and such induced gratings could have promising applications in nonlinear optics and all-optical information processing.

Adiabatic propagation of short pulses under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency

Vasily G. Arkhipkin, Ivan V. Timofeev

The spatial and temporal dynamics of two short pulses propagating in an optically dense medium of resonant three-level Λ-atoms is investigated numerically and analytically. The maximum coherence for the Raman transition due to coherent population trapping. It is shown that, at the initial stage of propagation, the waveforms of such pulses only slightly change along the length of the medium, which may considerably exceed the length of linear absorption for a single weak pulse. As the length of the absorbing medium increases, the energy of the probe (first) pulse is completely transferred into the second (control) pulse.

Light-induced spatial gratings created by unipolar attosecond pulses coherently interacting with a resonant medium

Rostislav M. Arkhipov, Mikhail V. Arkhipov, A. V. Pakhomov +2 more

Abstract Recently, the possibility of the creation, erasing and ultrafast control of polarization and population inversion gratings by sequences of few-cycle bipolar pulses interacting with a medium in a resonant and coherent way was predicted. In this case, the overlapping of pulses in the medium is not needed for the creation of gratings. In this paper, we study the possibility of the ultrafast creation and control of spatial periodic gratings in a resonant medium when subcycle unipolar pulses (that is ones containing the constant spectral component of an electric field) propagate in the coherent regime.

Coherently induced grating in refractive index enhanced medium

Zhuan-Zhuan Liu, Yu-Yuan Chen, Jia-Yu Yuan +1 more

We demonstrate a scheme for coherently induced grating based on a mixture of two three-level atomic species interacting with two standing-wave fields. As a result of interaction between the absorptive and amplified Raman resonances, the refractive index of the medium can be enhanced and modulated periodically. Then a sinusoidal grating, which can diffract the probe field into high-order directions, is coherently formed in the medium. The proposed scheme is theoretically investigated in a mixture of atomic isotopes of rubidium. The results show that the diffraction efficiency depends strongly on the two two-photon detunings of the two Raman transitions and the intensities of the two driving standing-wave fields. The proposed electromagnetically induced grating scheme may be applied to the all-optical switching and beam splitting in optical networking and communication.
