Time-dependent highly correlated photons

Abstract

Enhanced time-dependent photon–photon correlations are shown to occur in a setup consisting of a spontaneously damped and strongly laser-pumped two-level emitter embedded in a leaking optical micro-resonator. The nonlinear effects arising for intense qubit-cavity couplings are responsible for increasing the photon correlations and their intensity. Particularly, the photon correlations at certain time-intervals are larger than those in the steady-state.

Enhanced photon correlations due to strong laser-atom-cavity coupling

Viorel Ciornea, P. Bardetski, Mihai Macovei

We investigate the resonant quantum dynamics of a laser-pumped real or artificial two-level single-atom system embedded in a leaking microcavity. We found that for stronger laser-atom-cavity couplings the generated microcavity photons exhibit larger steady-state correlations. In particular, the second- and third-order photon correlation functions are greater than the corresponding ones obtained for an incoherent light source, respectively. Furthermore, the emitted microcavity photon flux is enhanced in comparison to weaker coupling cases.

Quantum Photon Conversion via Coherently Driven Permanent Dipole Systems

Sergiu Carlig, Alexandra Mîrzac, P. Bardetski +1 more

The photon quantum dynamics in a damped single-mode quantized cavity field coupled with a resonantly driven two-level system possessing nonzero permanent dipoles is investigated here. The interacting subsystems are very different frequencies (microwave and optical domains) and, in this highly dispersive regime, the emitter couples to the resonator mode via its diagonal dipole moments only. As a result, this interaction regime is responsible for the cavity multiphoton quantum dynamics and photon conversion from optical to terahertz ranges, for instance. Furthermore, enhanced terahertz photon correlations occur as well.

Correlated photon-pair emission from pumped-pulsed quantum dots embedded in a microcavity

Perea, J. I., Filippo Troiani, C. Tejedor

We theoretically investigate the optical response of a quantum dot, embedded in a microcavity and incoherently excited by pulsed pumping. The exciton and biexciton transition are off-resonantly coupled with the left- and right-polarized mode of the cavity, while the two-photon resonance condition is fulfilled. Rich behaviours are shown to occur in the time dependence of the second-order correlation functions which refer to counter-polarized photons. The corresponding time-averaged quantities, which are accessible to experiments, confirm that such a dot-cavity system behaves as a good emitter of single, polarization-correlated photon pairs.

Enhanced collective Purcell effect of coupled quantum emitter systems

David Plankensteiner, Christian Sommer, Michael Reitz +2 more

Cavity-embedded quantum emitters show strong modifications of free space radiation properties such as an enhanced decay known as the Purcell effect. The central parameter is the cooperativity $C$, the ratio of the square of the coherent cavity coupling strength over the product of cavity and emitter decay rates. For a single emitter, $C$ is independent of the transition dipole moment and dictated by geometric cavity properties such as finesse and mode waist. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 093601 (2017)], we have shown that collective excitations in ensembles of dipole-dipole coupled quantum emitters show a disentanglement between the coherent coupling to the cavity mode and spontaneous free space decay. This leads to a strong enhancement of the cavity cooperativity around certain collective subradiant antiresonances. Here, we present a quantum Langevin equations approach aimed at providing results beyond the classical coupled dipoles model. We show that the subradiantly enhanced cooperativity imprints its effects onto the cavity output field quantum correlations while also strongly increasing the cavity-emitter system's collective Kerr nonlinear effect.

Single-Emitter Laser in a Photonic Band Gap Micro-Chip

Lucia Florescu, Sajeev John

We study a laser consisting of a coherently pumped two-level emitter coupled to both a multimode waveguide channel and a high-quality micro-cavity embedded within a photonic crystal. One mode is engineered to exhibit a sharp cutoff within the PBG, leading to a large discontinuity in the local photon density of states near the atom. Another mode of the waveguide channel is used to propagate the pump beam. The cavity field characteristics are highly distinct from those of a corresponding high-Q cavity in ordinary vacuum. We demonstrate strong enhancement of the cavity field, better coherence, and narrower emission spectrum resulting from the radiation reservoir of the photonic crystal
