Complete basis set via straight-line coherent-state superpositions

Abstract

The properties of one-dimensional straight-line superposition states obtained as a continuous generalization of the even and odd coherent states are studied. Superposition states with Hermite-polynomial--Gaussian distribution functions are introduced. These states form a complete orthonormal basis set in the Hilbert space of quantum oscillators. This basis makes it possible to obtain the straight-line coherent-state distribution function for a given state. As an example, the distribution functions for squeezed coherent states are derived.

One dimensional representations in quantum optics

József Janszky

As a generalization of the optical Schroedinger cats discrete and continuous sets of coherent states are considered on a circle and on a straight line in the a-plane. The interference fringes between the coherent states of the Schroedinger cats form the characteristic pattern of the nonclassical states in Wigner function picture. Continuos superpositions of coherent states on these one-dimensional manifolds can serve as an orthonormal basis for representation of any states.

On Complete Orthonormal Sets of Coherent and of Squeezed States

L. Ya. Baranov, Raphael David Levine

Abstract A complete set of harmonic oscillator orthogonal coherent states is discussed. The properties of the states are studied, in particular towards applications as a basis for nonstationary problems. To make such a basis even more flexible, an orthonormal set of squeezed states is introduced. These states share most of the properties that make the familiar coherent states useful in applications. They are also extremal states of the uncertainty product. Their particular advantage, beyond the obvious one of orthogonality, is in applications to the dynamics of excited states.

Study on a Phase Space Representation of Quantum Theory

Tokiniaina Ranaivoson, Raoelina Andriambololona, Hanitriarivo Rakotoson +1 more

A study on a method for the establishment of a phase space representation of quantum theory is presented. The approach utilizes the properties of Gaussian distribution, the properties of Hermite polynomials, Fourier analysis and the current formulation of quantum mechanics which is based on the use of Hilbert space and linear operators theory. Phase space representation of quantum states and wave functions in phase space are introduced using properties of a set of functions called harmonic Gaussian functions. Then, new operators called dispersion operators are defined and identified as the operators which admit as eigenstates the basis states of the phase space representation. Generalization of the approach for multidimensional cases is shown. Examples of applications are given.

Frame-dependent coherence of Gaussian quantum states

Nicolae Cotfas

A Hilbert space is usually described using an orthonormal basis, but a more general description can be defined using a tight frame. In the case of continuous-variable Gaussian states, the coherence is usually described using the Hermite-Gauss basis. We present an alternative description using the tight frame of all canonical coherent states. The description of Gaussian states in terms of coherent states is simpler than in terms of Hermite-Gauss basis, and this allows us to obtain an explicit formula describing the frame-dependent coherence of a mixed Gaussian state as a function of the determinant and the trace of covariance matrix. For each mixed Gaussian state, we construct a sequence of discrete-variable quantum states rapidly convergent to it (as concern the purity and coherence) when the dimension of Hilbert space becomes large enough (15 or more). In the discrete case, the coherence is measured with respect to the tight frame of all discrete coherent states.

Coherent states, even and odd coherent states in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space and their properties

Barnana Roy, Papai Roy

We have considered a harmonic oscillator in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space spanned by orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable and constructed coherent states as well as even and odd coherent states of this oscillator. Various properties such as squeezing and antibunching of these states have also been examined.

Unitary Representations of Quantum Superpositions of Two Coherent States and Beyond

ANTONINO MESSINA, Gheorghe Eugen Drăgănescu

The construction of a class of unitary operators generating linear superpositions of generalized coherent states from the ground state of a quantum harmonic oscillator is reported. Such a construction, based on the properties of a new ad hoc introduced set of hermitian operators, leads to the definition of new basis in the oscillator Hilbert space, extending in a natural way the displaced Fock states basis. The potential development of our method and our results are briefly outlined.
