Atomic two-photon excitation by an injected squeezed vacuum in a cavity

Peng Zhou, S. Swain

We study the two-photon excitation rate and the spectrum of a three-level atom in the \ensuremath{\Xi} configuration interacting with a resonant cavity mode which is coupled to a broadband squeezed vacuum through its input-output mirror. We show that the optical Bloch equations in the cavity environment are formally identical to these in free space but, in the bad-cavity limit, with cavity-modified parameters describing the injected squeezed vacuum. It is shown that the two-photon excitation rate (which is proportional to the upper-level population) has two components, one depending linearly and the other quadratically on the squeezed photon number N, in excellent agreement with experiment [Georgiades et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 3426 (1995)]. The presence of the term quadratic in N is entirely due to the effectively imperfect correlation of the squeezed photon pairs in the bad cavity. We also find that the two-photon excitation spectrum (as measured by the fluorescent emission from the upper level to the intermediate level) exhibits an extremely narrow peak at line center, under appropriate choices of the bad-cavity parameters. All these results are independent of the squeezed phase. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Quantum interference in two-photon excitation with squeezed and coherent fields

N. Ph. Georgiades, Eugene Simon Polzik, Harry J. Kimble

Two-photon excitation of a three-level atom in a ladder configuration $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{2}3)$ by simultaneous illumination with fields in squeezed vacuum and coherent states results in quantum interference for the excitation process. The particular configuration considered here is one for which the signal and idler output fields of a subthreshold nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator are in resonance with the two-stepwise dipole atomic transitions $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}2,\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{2}3),$ while a ``reference oscillator'' field is in two-photon resonance with the quadrupole transition $(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{1}3).$ In an extension of the work of Ficek and Drummond [Phys. Rev. A 43, 6247 (1991)], a theoretical formulation based on the full quantum master equation for the problem is presented. The combined effects of quantum interference and the nonclassical character of the squeezed state are investigated, and offer the potential for a new detection strategy for quantum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field with ultrahigh frequencies (10's--100's THz). Based on the theory developed, we analyze quantum interference in excitation in several special cases relevant to experimental realizations, including the effects of a small focusing angle of the squeezing onto the atoms, and unusual population inversions. Special emphasis is given to identifying intrinsically quantum optical field effects versus classical field effects. Procedures that could distinguish between the two (i.e., classical and nonclassical) are suggested.

Multiple Effective Two-photon Correlatedemission Optical Bistability with Injected Squeezed Vacuum

Huang Hongbin

A new kind of optical bistability—the correlatedemission optical bistability(CEOB) in which coherently pumped atoms with n-1 almost degenerate lowlevels and m+1 almost degenerate upper levels are injected into a cavity randomly, and undergo multiple effective two-photon transitions in the cavity has been studies. The results show that the effective two-photon CEOB can generate phasesqueezed state of light from an ordinary vacuum only in the low branch of CEOB, and perfect photonnumber squeezings of light from a squeezed vacuum only in the high branch of CEOB. It is also find that the critical values of cooperativity C and the operations of CEOBs are all affected by atomic coherences and atomic populations.
