Phase Transitions of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Fermi Gas

T. Sugiyama

Phase transitions of a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi gas are studied by the use of the renormalization group method for the fermion system without the bosonization. Intrachain backward and forward scatterings, pair electron hopping between different chains and exchange scattering of electrons in different chains are taken account of. Pair electron hopping gives rise to the singlet and triplet superconductor phase transitions. Electron exchange scattering gives rise to the spin density wave and charge density wave transitions. Calculation is made by the use of the one-dimensional dispersion. Following Menyhárd's method (Ref. 1) for the model with interchain backward scattering only, the change of the fluctuation from the one-dimensional region to the three-dimensional region is described. The transition temperatures are given by the bare couplings at high temperatures.

Phonon-induced instabilities in correlated electron Hamiltonians

Nahom Yirga, Ka-Ming Tam, David K Campbell

Studies of Hamiltonians modeling electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling have been fundamental in capturing the novel ordering seen in many quasi-one-dimensional condensed matter systems. Extending such studies to quasi-two-dimensional (2D) systems is of great current interest, as e-ph couplings are predicted to play a major role in the stabilization or enhancement of novel phases in 2D material systems. In this work, we study model systems that describe the interplay between the Hubbard coupling and the phonon modes in the Holstein and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonians using the functional renormalization group. For both types of e-ph couplings, we find the predicted charge density wave phases in competition with antiferromagnetic ordering. As the system is doped, the transition shifts, with both orders showing incommensurate peaks. We compare the evolution of the quasiparticle weight for the Holstein model with that of the SSH model as the systems transition from antiferromagnetic to charge-ordered ground states. Finally, we calculate the self-energy of the phonon and capture the impact of charge ordering on the phonon modes.

Spin, Charge and Quasi-Particle Gaps in the One-Dimensional Kondo Lattice withf2Configuration

Shinji Watanabe, Yoshio Kuramoto, Tomotoshi Nishino +1 more

The ground state properties of the one-dimensional Kondo lattice with an f^2 configuration at each site are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. At half-filling, competition between the Kondo exchange J and the antiferromagnetic intra f-shell exchange I leads to reduction of energy gaps for spin, quasi-particle and charge excitations. The attractive force among conduction electrons is induced by the competition and the bound state is formed. As J/I increases the f^2 singlet gives way to the Kondo singlet as the dominant local correlation. The remarkable change of the quasi-particle gap is driven by the change of the spin-1/2 excitation character from the itinerant one to the localized one. Possible metal-insulator transition is discussed which may occur as the ratio J/I is varied by reference to mean-field results in the f^2 lattice system and the two impurity Kondo system.
