Phase Transitions of A Quasi-One-Dimensional Fermi Gas

T. Sugiyama

Abstract

Phase transitions of a quasi-one-dimensional Fermi gas are studied by the use of the renormalization group method for the fermion system without the bosonization. Intrachain backward and forward scatterings, pair electron hopping between different chains and exchange scattering of electrons in different chains are taken account of. Pair electron hopping gives rise to the singlet and triplet superconductor phase transitions. Electron exchange scattering gives rise to the spin density wave and charge density wave transitions. Calculation is made by the use of the one-dimensional dispersion. Following Menyhárd's method (Ref. 1) for the model with interchain backward scattering only, the change of the fluctuation from the one-dimensional region to the three-dimensional region is described. The transition temperatures are given by the bare couplings at high temperatures.

Theory of the quasi-one-dimensional electron gas with strong "on-site" interactions

Victor J. Emery

It is shown that a quasi-one-dimensional system with strong attractive or repulsive coupling between electrons on the same site is equivalent to a Bose gas with hard core and longer-range interactions and to a Heisenberg-Ising magnet. Interchain and intrachain hopping and coupling are included and the equivalences are derived by elementary degenerate perturbation theory. Electronic correlation functions are derived from known pseudomagnetic ones and are used to discuss the circumstances in which superconductivity, charge- or spin-density wave transitions occur in the coupled chains.

Crossover between High and Low Energy-States in Two-Coupled Chains of Tomonaga Model

Masahisa Tsuchiizu, Hideo Yoshioka, Yoshikazu Suzumura

By applying the renormalization group method to two-coupled chains in the Tomonaga model, the role of interchain hopping has been studied in the entire energy region. The energy for a crossover from the perturbational regime to the relevant regime becomes smaller than that of the interchain hopping due to one-dimensional fluctuations of the mutual interaction. From the calculation of response functions for charge density waves and superconducting states, the phase diagram of dominant and subdominant states has been obtained in the plane of mutual interactions with fixed energy. Organic conductors, 1) which exhibit low dimensional fluctuations, have been studied by using the model of quasi-one-dimensional systems, where the role of the interchain hopping plays an important role. As a basic model for such a system, two-coupled chains of interacting electrons

Phase diagram of the one dimensional $t_1-t_2-J$ model: Ferromagnetism, triplet pairing, charge and pair density waves

Luhang Yang, Adrian E. Feiguin

We present a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of an extended $t-J$ model with hopping to the first and second neighbors -- the one dimensional $t_1-t_2-J$ model. The full phase diagram as a function of the density $n$ and exchange strength $J$, for both positive and negative values of $t_2$, is obtained. For $t_2=-0.5$ we observe that, in the strongly interacting region, Nagaoka Ferromagnetism (FM) is accompanied by a triplet pair density wave (PDW) upon doping. As the spin exchange $J$ increases, a charge density wave (CDW) phase emerges and then gives way to singlet superconductivity (SC). This phase behaves as a singlet PDW with vanishing spacial average of the order parameter and a spin gap. When $t_2=0.5$, the physics is basically reminiscent of the conventional $t-J$ model, undergoing a transition from a metallic to a SC phase as a function of $J$.

Intra- and Inter-Chain Excitations near a Quantum Phase Transition in Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductors

Kenji Yonemitsu

We study intra- and inter-chain excitation spectra near a quantum phase transition in a spinless fermion model on a two-leg ladder at half filling by the finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization-group method. Above a critical strength of intrachain nearest-neighbor repulsion, a gap appears, accompanied with a long-range order of density modulation in the checkerboard pattern at zero temperature. The intra chain excitation spectra do not change so much in the gapless phase below the critical strength, while the inter chain excitation spectra are considerably altered by the intra chain repulsion even in the gapless phase. Relevance to the optical conductivity in quasi-one-dimensional electron systems is suggested.

The metal - insulator phase transition, quasiparticle damping and superconductivity in a layered Fermi gas

Y. M. Malozovsky, J. D. Fan

By means of the Fermi-liquid approach, the effects of exchange and correlations are considered in a layered two-dimensional electron gas. A graphical derivative technique is introduced to obtain the contributions to the interparticle interactions from different channels. It is shown that the interaction in the particle - hole channel can induce the metal - insulator phase transition when the Fermi momentum is comparable with the inverse interlayer spacing, . It is also shown that the Cooper-like scattering processes give rise to the scaling of the Fermi liquid response as Im , which leads to the linear temperature dependence of the quasiparticle damping. The possibility of superconductivity in the region between the insulator and normal metal phases, accounting for the particle - hole excitations, is discussed. The effect of the spin fluctuations on the superconductivity due to the particle - hole excitations is also considered.

Deconfinement Transition and Luttinger to Fermi Liquid Crossover in Quasi-One-Dimensional Systems

Silke Biermann, Antoine Georges, Alexander I. Lichtenstein +1 more

We investigate a system of one-dimensional Hubbard chains of interacting fermions coupled by interchain hopping. Using a generalization of the dynamical mean-field theory we study the deconfinement transition from a Mott insulator to a metal and the crossover between Luttinger and Fermi liquid phases. One-particle properties, local spin response, and interchain optical conductivity are calculated. Possible applications to organic conductors are discussed.
