Abstract

We report our experimental studies of interplays between four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in multidressed two- and three-level atomic systems. The Autler–Townes splitting of the FWM signal within the electromagnetically induced transparency window has been experimentally observed. Under the same experimental conditions in different energy-level systems, the dressing effects strongly depend on the dipole moments of the transitions, which can provide an easy and qualitative way to determine the orders of magnitude of the effective dipole moments for different transitions by comparing the FWM suppressing effects.

Polarization spectroscopy of dressed four-wave mixing in a three-level atomic system

Ruimin Wang, Yigang Du, Yanpeng Zhang +6 more

Polarization properties of pure four-wave mixing (FWM) and dressed-FWM processes in a two-level system and a cascade three-level atomic system are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The relative intensities and polarization characteristics of the FWM signals in different laser polarization configurations and different level systems are experimentally investigated and compared. Also, the results are theoretically explained by different transition paths combinations. In the dressed-FWM processes, we study the dependence of dressing effect on the incident field's polarization. The FWM signal generated by a linearly polarized pumping field is suppressed more by the dressing field than the one generated by a circularly polarized pumping field. However, an opposite effect was observed when the probe field's polarization is changed. The multidressing mechanisms are used to explain these effects. In addition, the interference and polarization dependence of the coexisting FWM signals in the same atomic system are discussed.

Polarized Suppression and Enhancement of Six-Wave Mixing in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency Window

Zhiguo Wang, Huaibin Zheng, Haixia Chen +5 more

We show that polarization properties of the suppression and enhancement as well as the Autler-Townes (AT) splitting of two coexisting six-wave mixing (SWM) processes in multi-Zeeman levels atomic system. By scanning the frequency detuning of the dressing field, we observe the suppression and enhancement as well as the AT splitting of the two coexisting SWM processes with the different polarized probe beams. Different polarization states of the probe beam can select different transitions among multi-Zeeman levels and different dressing strengths. The AT splitting separations get slightly large as the probe beam changes from the linearly polarized state to the circularly polarized one. Under the conditions of different dressing fields, the polarization dependence of the SWM enhancement and suppression shows the inverse variation. Theoretical calculations are carried out, which are in good agreement with the experimental results.

Competition and Energy Transfer Between Forward and Backward Four-Wave Mixing via Atomic Coherence

Lin Cheng, Yaling Tian, Yize Liu +4 more

Two four-wave mixing (FWM) processes with different directions and frequencies can coexist and interfere in a four-level inverted-Y-type atomic system, the generated FWM beams fall into two different electromagnetically induced transparency windows. We report Autler-Townes splitting and dressed suppression and enhancement of two generated FWM beams. In the case of matched slow FWM beams, two FWM processes compete and exchange their energies between them, the forward four-wave beam give its energy to the backward four-wave beam by interaction for long distance. Such studies of two FWM beams can have vital applications in studying the higher-order nonlinear optical processes, generating correlated photon pairs and quantum information processing.

Multidressing interaction of four-wave mixing image in three-level atomic system

Suling Sang, Huaibin Zheng, Zhiguo Wang +5 more

We demonstrate different dressed processes of four-wave mixing (FWM), as changing the powers of the probe, pump, and dressing fields, respectively, in ladder-type three-level system. It is demonstrated that scanning detuning of the dressing field can lead to the direct detection of the dressing effects and the interaction between the dressing fields, compared with scanning that of the probe field. Moreover, by respectively controlling the powers of the dressing, pump, and probe fields, the enhancement and suppression of FWM signals can be switched sensitively. Meanwhile, the spatial splitting in y direction of FWM signal due to the cross-phase modulation and electromagnetically induced gratings is observed, respectively. Such nonlinear signal with switchable enhancement has potential applications in optical switching, optical communication, and quantum information processing.

Dressed multi-wave mixing in a V-type four-level atomic system

Tong Jiang, Zhang Yan-Peng, Nie Zhi-Qiang +8 more

The dressed four- and six-wave mixings in a V-type four-level system are considered. Under two different dressed conditions, two- and three-photon resonant Autler–Townes splittings, accompanied by enhancement and suppression of wave mixing signal, are obtained analytically. Meanwhile, an electromagnetic induced transparency of multi-wave mixing is presented, which shows multiple peaks and asymmetric effects caused by one-photon, two-photon and three-photon resonances, separately. The slow light propagation multiple region of multi-wave mixing signal is also obtained.

Dressed Four-Wave Mixing From Upper Branch in a Sodium Atomic Vapor

Huaibin Zheng, Xun Zhang, Jia Sun +4 more

With electromagnetically induced transparency-assisted configuration, a four-wave mixing (FWM) process generated from the upper branch of a cascade-type three-level atomic system is studied both theoretically and experimentally. Through the advantage of neglecting the absorption of a FWM signal due to a much smaller transition probability of a two-photon process, we easily observe the Autler-Townes effect altering the energy levels in such FWM processes. Meanwhile, the multiplied line shapes of a FWM spectrum are investigated by varying the frequency detuning. By applying external field, such FWM processes can be manipulated through modulating the dark state. Finally, conversion efficiency is considered by changing the temperature of oven, which shows a threshold temperature point. Theoretical interpretations correspond well with the experimental data.
