Abstract

Polarization properties of pure four-wave mixing (FWM) and dressed-FWM processes in a two-level system and a cascade three-level atomic system are theoretically and experimentally investigated. The relative intensities and polarization characteristics of the FWM signals in different laser polarization configurations and different level systems are experimentally investigated and compared. Also, the results are theoretically explained by different transition paths combinations. In the dressed-FWM processes, we study the dependence of dressing effect on the incident field's polarization. The FWM signal generated by a linearly polarized pumping field is suppressed more by the dressing field than the one generated by a circularly polarized pumping field. However, an opposite effect was observed when the probe field's polarization is changed. The multidressing mechanisms are used to explain these effects. In addition, the interference and polarization dependence of the coexisting FWM signals in the same atomic system are discussed.

Coexisting polarized four-wave mixing processes in a two-level atomic system

We investigate the polarization dependence of eight coexisting four-wave mixing (FWM) signals in a two-level atomic system. The intensities and polarization states of coexisting FWM signals are modulated by the polarization configurations and frequency detunings of the incident fields. The suppression and enhancement due to the dressing effects present different polarization dependences. Both the mutual-dressing effect and the self-dressing effect are considered to explain the observed phenomena.

Enhancement and suppression of spatial splitting four-wave mixing in atomic medium

Yuming Zhuang, Suling Sang, Peiying Li +6 more

We experimentally report on the evolution from singly-dressed to doubly-dressed four-wave mixing (FWM) process by controlling the powers of the probe, the pump and the dressing fields respectively. The differences in the enhancement and the suppression of FWM signal between the two-level and cascade three-level atomic systems are observed and explained by the multi-dressed effect theoretically. Both the x direction and the y direction spatial splittings of the degenerate-FWM (DWFM) beams are obtained. We also investigate the switch between the enhancement and the suppression of the DWFM signals and between its spatial splittings in x direction and y direction. The spatial splittings in x direction and y direction can be controlled by the relative position and the intensity of the involved laser beams. Such a study can be useful for optimizing the efficiency of the FWM process and providing potential applications in spatial signal processing.

Multidressing interaction of four-wave mixing image in three-level atomic system

Suling Sang, Huaibin Zheng, Zhiguo Wang +5 more

We demonstrate different dressed processes of four-wave mixing (FWM), as changing the powers of the probe, pump, and dressing fields, respectively, in ladder-type three-level system. It is demonstrated that scanning detuning of the dressing field can lead to the direct detection of the dressing effects and the interaction between the dressing fields, compared with scanning that of the probe field. Moreover, by respectively controlling the powers of the dressing, pump, and probe fields, the enhancement and suppression of FWM signals can be switched sensitively. Meanwhile, the spatial splitting in y direction of FWM signal due to the cross-phase modulation and electromagnetically induced gratings is observed, respectively. Such nonlinear signal with switchable enhancement has potential applications in optical switching, optical communication, and quantum information processing.

Interplay among multidressed four-wave mixing processes

Huaibin Zheng, Yanpeng Zhang, Zhiqiang Nie +4 more

We report our experimental studies of interplays between four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in multidressed two- and three-level atomic systems. The Autler–Townes splitting of the FWM signal within the electromagnetically induced transparency window has been experimentally observed. Under the same experimental conditions in different energy-level systems, the dressing effects strongly depend on the dipole moments of the transitions, which can provide an easy and qualitative way to determine the orders of magnitude of the effective dipole moments for different transitions by comparing the FWM suppressing effects.

Interactions of Three Dual-Dressing Effects of Four-Wave Mixing in a Five-Level Atomic System

Li Pei-Zhe, Nie Zhi-Qiang, Zhang Yan-Peng +5 more

We study the four-wave mixing (FWM) in an opening five-level system with two dressing fields. There are three kinds of doubly dressing mechanisms (parallel cascade, sequential cascade, and nested cascade) in the system for doubly dressed four-wave mixing. These mechanisms reflect different correlations between two dressing fields and different effects of two dressing fields to the FWM. Investigation of these mechanisms is helpful to understand the generated high-order nonlinear optical signal dressed by multi-fields.

Controlling enhancement and suppression of four-wave mixing via polarized light

Changbiao Li, Yanpeng Zhang, Zhiqiang Nie +4 more

We show that the four-wave mixing (FWM) processes in a multi-Zeeman level atomic system can be enhanced and suppressed by changing the polarization of one of the pump beams. Different polarization states of the pump beams will act on different transition pathways among the multi-Zeeman levels with different transition strengths, which affect the FWM efficiencies. An additional dress field applied to the adjacent transition can cause energy level splitting and therefore control the enhancement and suppression of the FWM processes in the system. The experimental results are in good agreement with our theoretical calculations.
