Spatial labeling in a two-photon interferometer

Abstract

We study the spatial coherence of entangled photon pairs that are generated via type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). By manipulating the spatial overlap between the two down-converted beams in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer we observe the spatial interference of multiple transverse modes for an even and an odd number of mirrors in the interferometer. We demonstrate that the two-photon spatial coherence, which is quantified in terms of a transverse coherence length, differs completely for the two mirror geometries and support this result by a theoretical and experimental explanation in terms of photon labeling.

Multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel Interferometry

Walborn, S P, Nogueira, W A T, De Oliveira, A N +2 more

We review some recent experiments based upon multimode two-photon interference of photon pairs created by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The new element provided by these experiments is the inclusion of the transverse spatial profiles of the pump, signal and idler fields. We discuss multimode Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, and show that the transverse profile of the pump beam can be manipulated in order to control two-photon interference. We present the basic theory and experimental results as well as several applications to the field of quantum information.

Two-photon quantum interference in the 1.5 μm telecommunication band

Seok-Beom Cho, Tae-Gon Noh

We report on two-photon quantum interference experiments in the standard telecommunication band. Two identical photons in the 1.5 mm wavelength band were generated in spatially separated modes by a type-I spontaneous parametric down-conversion process, and injected into a fiber-optic Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer. Two-photon interference patterns of dip and spatial beating in the coincidence counting rate were observed by varying the difference in optical path lengths. The visibilities obtained in the net coincidences were close to the theoretical value of 100%. The raw visibilities were also well above the classical limit.

Transverse coherence length of down-converted light in the two-photon state

E. J. S. Fonseca, Carlos Henrique Monken, Sebastião Pádua +1 more

Measurements of the Young interference pattern for down-converted light in the two-photon state are performed. Light in the two-photon state is generated at the output of a Hong-Ou-Mandel balanced interferometer. Two-photon interference patterns with visibilities up to 100% are obtained. Visibilities of the two-photon interference patterns as a function of the double-slit separation are obtained and show that the transverse coherence length of the two-photon light is much larger than the one-photon beam for the distances considered in the experiment.

Spatial two-photon interference in a Hong-Ou-Mandel interferometer

Heonoh Kim, Osung Kwon, Wonsik Kim +1 more

We report the observation of the cosine modulation in the coincidence rates from a Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) interferometer. Spatial interference fringes are seen by minute rotations of one mirror about the vertical axis, while the beam splitter is fixed in the center position. The results show that the maximum visibility of the fringe is 0.81, and the photon pairs separated by less than $1.52\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{mm}$ in the source plane are measured to be indistinguishable. It turns out that it is possible to invert the HOM dips to peaks by the rotation of the mirror.

Spatially entangled photon-pair generation using a partial spatially coherent pump beam

Hugo Defienne, Sylvain Gigan

We demonstrate experimental generation of spatially entangled photon pairs by spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) using a partial spatially coherent pump beam. By varying the spatial coherence of the pump, we show its influence on the down-converted photon's spatial correlations and on its degree of entanglement, in excellent agreement with theory. We then exploit this property to produce pairs of photons with a specific degree of entanglement by tailoring of the pump coherence length. This work thus unravels the fundamental transfer of coherence occurring in SPDC processes, and provides a simple experimental scheme to generate photon pairs with a well-defined degree of spatial entanglement, which may be useful for quantum communication and information processing.
