Abstract

Based on a master equation for the reduced density matrix of an open quantum collective system, the influence of coordinate-dependent microscopical diffusion coefficients on the decay rate from a metastable state is treated. For various frictions and temperatures larger than a crossover temperature, the quasistationary decay rates obtained with the coordinate-dependent microscopical set of diffusion coefficients are compared with those obtained with the coordinate-independent microscopical set of diffusion coefficients and coordinate-independent and -dependent phenomenological sets of diffusion coefficients. Neglecting the coordinate dependence of diffusion coefficients, one can strongly overestimate or underestimate the decay rate at low temperature. The coordinate-dependent phenomenological diffusion coefficient in momentum are shown to be suitable for applications.

On the basis of a master equation for the reduced density matrix of open quantum systems, we study the influence of time-dependent friction and diffusion coefficients on the decay rate from a potential well and the capture probability into a potential well. Taking into account the mixed diffusion coefficient Dqp, the quasistationary decay rates are compared with the analytically derived Kramers-type formulas for different temperatures and frictions. The diffusion coefficients supplying the purity of states are derived for a non-Markovian dynamics.

Application of the theory of open quantum systems to nuclear physics problems

Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, Z. Kanokov, G. G. Adamian +1 more

Quantum diffusion equations with transport coefficients explicitly depending on time are derived from the generalized non-Markovian Langevin equations. The asymptotic behavior of the friction and diffusion coefficients is investigated in the case of the FC and RWA couplings between the collective and internal subsystems. An asymptotic expression is obtained for the propagator of the density matrix of the open quantum system with the general quadratic Hamiltonian, linearly coupled (in coordinate and momentum) to internal degrees of freedom. The effect of different sets of transport coefficients on the decoherence and decay rate of the metastable state is investigated using the master equation for the reduced density matrix of open quantum systems. The developed approach is used to study the capture of the projectile nucleus by the target nucleus at energies near the Coulomb barrier. Capture cross sections in asymmetric reactions are well described with allowance for the calculated capture probabilities. Particular cases where dissipation favors penetration through the potential barrier are found. The generalized Kramers formula for the quasi-stationary decay rate of the quantum metastable systems is analytically derived.

Probability of passing through a parabolic barrier and thermal decay rate: Case of linear coupling both in momentum and in coordinate

R. A. Kuzyakin, Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, G. G. Adamian +1 more

With the quantum diffusion approach, the probability of passing through the parabolic barrier and the quasistationary thermal decay rate from a metastable state are examined in the limit of linear coupling both in momentum and in coordinate between a collective subsystem and the environment. An increase of passing probability with friction coefficient is demonstrated to occur at subbarrier energies.

Peculiarities of parabolic-barrier penetrability and thermal decay rate with the quantum diffusion approach

With the quantum diffusion approach, the passing probability through the parabolic barrier is examined in the limit of linear coupling in the momentum between the collective subsystem and environment. The dependencies of the penetrability on time, energy, and the coupling strength between the interacting subsystems are studied. The quasistationary thermal decay rate from a metastable state is considered in the cases of linear couplings both in the momentum and in the coordinate.

Quantum statistical effects in nuclear reactions, fission, and open quantum systems

Vazgen Valerikovich Sargsyan, Z. Kanokov, G. G. Adamian +1 more

Quantum diffusion equations with time-dependent transport coefficients are derived from generalized non-Markovian Langevin equations. Generalized fluctuation-dissipation relations and analytical formulas for calculating friction and diffusion coefficients in nuclear processes are obtained. The asymptotics of the transport coefficients and of the correlation functions are investigated. The problem of correlation decay in quantum dissipative systems is studied. A comparative analysis of diffusion coefficients for the harmonic and inverted oscillators is performed. The role of quantum statistical effects during passage through a parabolic potential barrier is investigated. Sets of diffusion coefficient assuring the purity of states at any time instant are found in cases of non-Markovian dynamics. The influence of different sets of transport coefficients on the rate of decay from a metastable state is studied in the framework of the master equation for reduced density matrices describing open quantum systems. The approach developed is applied to investigation of fission processes and the processes of projectile-nuclei capture by target nuclei for bombarding energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier. The influence of dissipation and fluctuation on these processes is taken into account in a self-consistent way. The evaporation residue cross sections for asymmetric fusion reactions are calculated from the derived capture probabilities averaged over all orientations of the deformed projectile and target nuclei.

Dissipative quantum systems with a potential barrier. III. Steady state nonequilibrium flux and reaction rate

Joachim Ankerhold, Hermann Grabert

We study the real time dynamics of a dissipative quantum system in a metastable state which may decay by crossing a potential barrier. Starting from an initial state where the system is in thermal equilibrium on one side of the barrier, the time evolution of the density matrix is evaluated analytically in the semiclassical approximation for coordinates near the barrier top. In a region about a critical temperature ${\mathrm{T}}_{\mathrm{c}}$ large quantum fluctuations render the harmonic approximation of the potential insufficient and anharmonicities become essential. Accounting for non-Gaussian fluctuation modes, we show that the density matrix approaches a quasistationary state with a constant flux across the barrier. This extends our earlier results [Phys. Rev. E 51, 4267 (1995)] on the quantum generalization of the Kramers flux state to the region about ${\mathrm{T}}_{\mathrm{c}}$. By matching the flux state onto the equilibrium state on one side of the barrier, we determine the decay rate out of the metastable state. The rate constant shows a changeover from thermally activated decay to quantum tunneling for temperatures below ${\mathrm{T}}_{\mathrm{c}}$.
