Abstract

An extension of the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov (HFB) theory of degenerate Bose systems in which the coupling between one and two quasi-particles is taken into account is developed. The excitation operators are written as linear combinations of one and two HFB quasi-particles. Excitation energies and quasi-particle amplitudes are given by generalized Bogoliubov equations. The excitation spectrum has two branches. The first one is a discrete branch which is gapless and has a phonon character at large wavelength and, contrarily to HFB, is always stable. This branch is detached from a second, continuum branch whose threshold, at fixed total momentum, coincides with the two quasi-particle threshold of the HFB theory. The gap between the two branches at P = 0 is twice the HFB gap, which thus provides for the relevant energy scale. Numerical results for a specific case are given.

Generalization of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory: one and two quasiparticle excitations

Paolo Tommasini, E. J. V. de Passos, M. O. C. Pires +1 more

We present a generalization of the Hartree-Fock Bogoliubov (HFB) theory in which the coupling between one and two quasi-particles is taken into account. This is done by writing the excitation operators as linear combinations of one and two HFB quasi-particles. The excitation energies and the quasi-particle amplitudes are given by generalized Bogoliubov equations. The excitation spectrum has two branches. The first one is a discrete branch which is gapless and has a phonon character at large wave-length and, contrarily to HFB, is always stable. This branch is detached from a continuum branch whose threshold, at fixed total momentum, coincides with the two quasi-particle threshold of the HFB theory. The gap between these two branches at P=0 is equal to two times the HFB gap, which then provides for the relevant energy scale. We also give numerical results for a specific case.

A Microscopic Theory of Superfluids. II: Quasi-Particles and Their Interaction

Shuichiro Yamasaki

A finite temperature system of degenerate bosons is studied with the aid of the extended Bogoliubov transformation which has been proposed in a preceding part I. The energies of quasi-particles and the vertex functions describing their interaction are determined in an approximation which includes the lowest order effects of the interaction between non-zero momentum bosons. The quasi-particle energy depends on the distribution of thermal excitations, and is of phonon type in the long wavelength limit. The phonon nature of the spectrum is preserved by the interaction between quasi-particles, because the vertex functions vanish in the long wavelength limit. In the limit as the condensate is depleted completely, the proposed formalism simplifies to the Hartree-Fock theory.

A Microscopic Theory of Superfluids. I: Quasi-Particles and the Extended Bogoliubov Transformation

Shuichiro Yamasaki

Creation and annihilation operators of quasi-particles are introduced into the description of a finite temperature system of degenerate bosons with the aid of a canonical transformation which generalizes the one due to Bogoliubov. A variational calculation taking into account the interaction between non-zero momentum particles shows that the quasi-particles are phonons in the long wave-length limit. The state of the system, which is approximated by the grand canonical ensemble of the quasi-particles, approaches the Hartree-Fock state when the condensate is depleted completely at the critical temperature.

Comparison of gapless mean-field theories for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

Nick P. Proukakis, S. A. Morgan, Seok Jin Choi +1 more

We present two gapless mean-field theories for trapped Bose-Einstein condensates, and compare them to the better known Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB)-Popov approach. The proposed theories are based on suitable inclusion of the simplest anomalous average of the Bose field operator. This leads to an effective interaction between two atoms which is both temperature and density dependent, as opposed to the HFB-Popov approach, for which it is constant. These theories are compared to the HFB-Popov approach for a trapped one-dimensional condensate of 2000 atoms. The density profiles and excitation frequencies of the proposed theories differ from the corresponding HFB-Popov ones by at most a few percent.

Spectrum of elementary excitations of the Bose system with allowance for pair correlations

Yu. M. Poluéktov

Here, it was shown that the chain of equations, which is similar to the Bogoliubov chain in the theory of classical gases, may be obtained for the quasi-averages of the products of field operators in the system of Bose particles. The closed system of dynamic equations, which accounts for both the one-particle condensate and pair correlations, was obtained at zero temperature for the case where it is sufficient to confine ourselves to taking into account the quasi-averages of one field operator and the products of two field operators. The spectrum of excitations in a spatially homogeneous state was studied, and it was shown that this spectrum has two branches: the sound branch and the branch with an energy gap at zero momentum. The possibility of the existence of quasiparticle excitations with an energy gap in superfluid helium was discussed in connection with experiments on the absorption of microwave radiation.

Coherence properties of the two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate

Christopher Gies, David A. W. Hutchinson

We present a detailed finite-temperature Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) treatment of the two-dimensional trapped Bose gas. We highlight the numerical methods required to obtain solutions to the HFB equations within the Popov approximation, the derivation of which we outline. This method has previously been applied successfully to the three-dimensional case and we focus on the unique features of the system which are due to its reduced dimensionality. These can be found in the spectrum of low-lying excitations and in the coherence properties. We calculate the Bragg response and the coherence length within the condensate in analogy with experiments performed in the quasi-one-dimensional regime [Richard et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 010405 (2003)] and compare to results calculated for the one-dimensional case. We then make predictions for the experimental observation of the quasicondensate phase via Bragg spectroscopy in the quasi-two-dimensional regime.
