Abstract

The profile and the temperature dependence of the blue satellite of the Cs(6S 1/2 -5D 5 ) transition perturbed by a rare gas is studied experimentally. By the use of the Szudy and Baylis (1975) quasimolecular model and various available ground-state potentials the profile of the satellite is calculated and the potential of the excited state is deduced from the fit with the experimental profile. The predicted temperature dependence of the calculation is then compared with experiment and the deviations are discussed.

Experimental investigation of the Rb (6S or 4D)-rare gas interaction: determination of interaction potentials and oscillator strengths

I. Dubourg, Michel Ferray, J. P. Visticot +1 more

The absorption profiles of the far wings of rubidium 5S to 6S and 5S to 4D forbidden transitions in the presence of a rare gas perturber (argon or helium) are experimentally investigated. The quasistatic interpretation of the temperature dependence of the profiles gives information about the excited state potential curves and the oscillator strengths of the various transitions. The experimental results are compared with calculated potentials and, particularly in the case of helium, with the l-dependent pseudo-potentials available for alkali-helium pairs.

Spectroscopic investigation of the Cs(7S1/2and 5D5/2;m=1/2)-He interaction

Michel Ferray, J. P. Visticot, J. Lozingot +1 more

The study of the temperature dependence of the Cs-He absorption spectrum between 5350 and 6850 AA gives information about both the Cs(7S and 5D 5/2 )-He interaction potentials and the oscillator strength of the 6S-5D 5/2 collision-induced transition. These experimental data are found to differ widely from the available theoretical results.

Depolarization, broadening and shift of the Rb 5 2p1/2 → 5 2s1/2 resonance line perturbed by rare gases

E. Roueff, H. Abgrall

Asymmetric self-broadening of Cs principal lines

Kay Niemax, Goran Pichler

16 lines of the principal series of Cs(6 2 s 1/2 to 7-16 2 p 3/2 and 6 2 s 1/2 to 7-12 2 p 1/2 ) were investigated in absorption. Cesium vapour density was varied from 10 13 up to 10 17 cm -3 . Red asymmetries of all lines (extended red wings) were detected. This can be understood if electron transitions in the long-range interaction region follow the selection rules of molecules. It was established that the red and the blue wings of the lines each can be fitted to lorentzian profiles in small wavelength intervals. With the help of quasistatic theory the interaction constants from the long-range interaction potential Delta omega =C 3 /r 3 multiplied by the oscillator strength were determined from measurements. For all lines the ratio of C 3 (red)/C 3 (blue) was found to equal 2 in accordance with earlier theoretical calculations. In the far line wing, deviation from a lorentzian profile occurs. This was interpreted as a consequence of electron transition in the short-range region of interatomic potentials.

Excitation transfer, lifetimes, and satellite bands in Cs(7p)–Xe collisions

John F. Kielkopf

Observation of the time-dependence of excitation transfer between Cs 7p 2P1/2 and 2P3/2 levels caused by collisions with xenon are reported. The 2P levels were selectively excited with an N2 laser-pumped dye laser, and the spectrum of the fluorescence radiation was observed with 5 nsec time resolution. The lifetimes of the levels were found to be (2P1/2) 154±2 nsec and (2P3/2) 135±2 nsec, and the 2P1/2 to 2P3/2 transfer cross section at 325±10 °K is 0.150±0.002 Å2. An analysis of the time-dependent decay versus xenon partial pressure shows that the cross section for quenching or collision induced radiation is less than 4×10−3 Å2. This demonstrates that collision induced transitions cannot be important in the formation of near red satellites on the Cs 6s–7p lines perturbed by Xe. In addition, the radiative decay constant for the satellite is identical to that for the line within experimental uncertainty. The correspondence of satellite and line decay curves provides a method of identifying satellites with their parent line.

Far-wing profile of photoabsorption spectra of Na(3s–3p) atoms perturbed by helium

Kamel Alioua, Moncef Bouledroua, Abdul-Rahman Allouche +1 more

The far wings of the sodium spectra arising from the collisional broadening of the D lines by ground helium atoms are investigated theoretically. The required X2Σ+, A2Π and B2Σ+ potential-energy curves and transition dipole moments have been generated from ab initio CASSCF-MRCI calculations to determine, within the framework of the semiclassical and full quantum-mechanical approaches, the temperature-dependent photoabsorption spectra. The profile is dominated by the free–free transitions at all temperatures ranging from 500 K to 3000 K and the computations show the existence of a satellite structure in the blue wing attributed to the X → B transitions. The satellites occur around the wavelength position 520 nm when the calculations are performed classically and around 528 nm when they are performed quantum mechanically. The results are in good accordance with those produced by other theoretical and experimental works.
