Experimental investigation of the Rb (6S or 4D)-rare gas interaction: determination of interaction potentials and oscillator strengths

Abstract

The absorption profiles of the far wings of rubidium 5S to 6S and 5S to 4D forbidden transitions in the presence of a rare gas perturber (argon or helium) are experimentally investigated. The quasistatic interpretation of the temperature dependence of the profiles gives information about the excited state potential curves and the oscillator strengths of the various transitions. The experimental results are compared with calculated potentials and, particularly in the case of helium, with the l-dependent pseudo-potentials available for alkali-helium pairs.

The study of the temperature dependence of the Cs-He absorption spectrum between 5350 and 6850 AA gives information about both the Cs(7S and 5D 5/2 )-He interaction potentials and the oscillator strength of the 6S-5D 5/2 collision-induced transition. These experimental data are found to differ widely from the available theoretical results.

van der Waals and resonance interaction in the quasimolecular system Eu-Sr

R. Logozar, Robert Beuc, Mladen Movre

The authors outline an asymptotic calculation of adiabatic potential curves for diatomic quasimolecular systems that happens to be quite accurate in the domain of long-range forces, even for atoms with complex electronic configurations. A formula for the molecular oscillator strength expressed via the oscillator strengths of the constituent atoms and the eigenfunctions of the effective Hamiltonian is presented. Quite general theoretical results on the electrostatic interaction within these quasimolecular systems are then applied to a calculation of the dipole-dipole interaction for the quasimolecule Eu-Sr, leading to the adiabatic potentials in the region of interatomic distances larger than approximately 1.0 nm. These results are checked by comparing the quasistatic absorption coefficient for the blue quasistatic wing of the Eu resonance line broadened by the influence of Sr atoms to the experimentally derived profile [K. Niemax, Phys. Rev. Lett. 55. 56 (1985)]. Excellent agreement is obtained. A great influence of the molecular oscillator strengths on the shape of the quasistatic profile is found, so that, in general, the character of the interaction potential could not be judged from log-log plots of the absorption coefficient alone.

Experimental study of the stellite of the Cs(6S1/2-5D5/2) line perturbed by a rare gas and comparison with the predictions of a quasimolecular model

J. P. Visticot, Józef Szudy, Michel Ferray +1 more

The profile and the temperature dependence of the blue satellite of the Cs(6S 1/2 -5D 5 ) transition perturbed by a rare gas is studied experimentally. By the use of the Szudy and Baylis (1975) quasimolecular model and various available ground-state potentials the profile of the satellite is calculated and the potential of the excited state is deduced from the fit with the experimental profile. The predicted temperature dependence of the calculation is then compared with experiment and the deviations are discussed.

Collisional depopulation of rubidium Rydberg levels by rare gases

M Hugon, B. Sayer, P. R. Fournier +1 more

The cross sections for the quenching of highly excited Rb(nS) (32<or=n<or=45) and Rb(nD) (30<or=n<or=41) states have been measured for the different rare gases. In most cases studied, the quenching cross sections seem rather constant or slightly decreasing with n for a given series and a given rare gas. The experimental data are compared with the results of calculations using various theoretical approaches. It is shown that in this range of large n values the main process responsible for the quenching is the Rydberg-electron-rare-gas interaction, as previously stated for lower n values (10<or=n<or=20).

Spectroscopic studies of alkali atom-rare gas systems

We describe a series of measurements of absorption and laser induced fluorescence on cells that contained cesium and rubidium and a rare gas: He, Ar, Kr, or Xe. These studies showed strong blue wing absorption to the short wavelength side of the alkali atom D2 lines due to collisionally formed Cs- or Rb-rare gas excimers. We also have observed an efficient two photon excitation of higher lying states in Cs and Rb that produces both intense blue emission and IR atomic emission in the 1.3 to 3.8 μm spectral region.

Spectroscopic investigations of Rb- and Cs- rare gas systems

We describe a series of measurements of absorption and laser induced fluorescence using cells that contained cesium and rubidium and krypton as a bath gas. These studies showed strong blue wing absorption to the short wavelength side of the alkali atom D2 lines due to collisionally formed Cs-Kr or Rb-Kr excimers. These studies indicate that these species may be appropriate candidates for optically excited Rb and Cs atomic lasers.
