Quantum coherence dynamics of a three-level atom in a two-mode field

Abstract

The correlated dynamics of a three-level atom resonantly coupled to an electromagnetic cavity field is calculated (Λ, V , and L models). A diagrammatic representation of quantum dynamics is proposed for these models. As an example, Λ-atom dynamics is examined to demonstrate how the use of conventional von Neumann’s reduction leads to internal decoherence (disentanglement-induced decoherence) and to the absence of atomic coherence under multiphoton excitation. The predicted absence of atomic coherence is inconsistent with characteristics of an experimentally observed atom-photon entangled state. It is shown that the correlated reduction of a composite quantum system proposed in [18] qualitatively predicts the occurrence and evolution of atomic coherence under multiphoton excitation if a seed coherence is introduced into any subsystem (the atom or a cavity mode).

Intrinsic decoherence in a system of three symmetric two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity field

Tamer A. Seoudy

Abstract This work provides a theoretical study of a quantum system consisting of three two-level atoms coupled to a single-mode cavity field, focusing on the effects of intrinsic decoherence (ID). The system’s evolution is modeled using Milburn equation, with atoms initially excited and the field in a coherent state. The dynamics evolution of linear entropy (purity), the $$l_1$$ l 1 -norm (coherence), and the mean photon number (collapse-revival) are analyzed. The results indicate that, as the decoherence parameter $$\gamma$$ γ increases, purity and coherence decrease, and collapse-revival features are progressively suppressed. These findings highlight the key role of intrinsic decoherence in degrading the quantum properties of atom-field systems, which is essential for understanding and improving quantum technologies under intrinsic decoherence.

Dynamics of atom-field entanglement: Towards strong-coupling and non-Markovian regimes

Nick Cummings, B. L. Hu

We examine the dynamics of bipartite quantum entanglement between a two-level atom and the electromagnetic field. We begin with the Jaynes-Cummings model with a single field mode and examine in detail the exact time evolution of entanglement, including cases where the atomic state is initially mixed and the atomic transition is detuned from resonance. We then explore the effects of other nearby modes by calculating the exact time evolution of entanglement in more complex systems with two, three, and five field modes. For these cases we can obtain exact solutions which include the strong-coupling regime. Finally, we consider the entanglement of a two-level atom with the infinite collection of modes present in the intracavity field of a Fabre-Perot cavity. In contrast to the usual treatment of atom-field interactions with a continuum of modes using the Born-Markov approximation, our treatment in all cases describes the full non-Markovian dynamics of the atomic subsystem under general couplings. Only when an analytic expression for the infinite mode case is desired do we need to make a weak coupling assumption which at late times approximates Markovian dynamics.

Entanglement of a three-level atom interacting with two-modes field in a cavity

Alejandra del Río‐Lima, Freddy Jackson Poveda-Cuevas, Octavio Castaños

Abstract The dynamics of an atom of three levels in Λ configuration interacting with a quantized field of two modes in a cavity is studied within the rotating wave approximation by considering experimental values of accessible hyperfine levels of alkali atoms. The Hamiltonian model is constructed on the basis of the direct product of the atomic states with Fock states of light. This simplified basis allows us to generalize the state of light to any quantum field. The interaction term of the Hamiltonian restricts the system to a 3D Hilbert space. The system’s time evolution results show some similarities with the effective two-level system, such as the presence of collapses and revivals and the atom-field entanglement. By an analysis of the statistics of the photons, we show that when the three-level atom is interacting with a coherent field of two modes, it is possible to control experimentally the statistics of the field to be super-Poissonian or sub-Poissonian by the choice of the initial atomic state.

Solvable dynamics of N driven two-level atoms coupled to a dissipative cavity mode

Matteo Bina, Federico Casagrande, ALFREDO LULLI

We solve exactly the dynamics of N strongly driven two-level atoms equally coupled on resonance to a dissipative cavity mode. Analytical results are derived on decoherence, entanglement, purity, atomic correlations and cavity field mean photon number. Decoherence-free subspaces are predicted for the whole system and the N -qubit subsystem. Multi-partite entangled states and cavity cat-like states can be conditionally generated. The decay of quantum coherence and purity can be monitored by joint measurements on atomic populations. Atoms prepared in states invariant under permutation of any two components evolve within the subspace spanned by the completely symmetric Dicke states. Applications to N = 3, 4 are discussed.

Intensity auto- and cross correlations for a three-level Λ-type atom in a driven, damped two-mode cavity

Patrick Hemphill, James Clemens

We calculate intensity autocorrelations and cross correlations for the light transmitted from a system consisting of a three-level Λ-type atom inside an optical cavity that supports two orthogonally polarized modes with one mode of the cavity weakly driven on resonance. We also include damping of the cavity modes and spontaneous emission from the atom using the framework of quantum trajectory theory. The correlation functions are compared with those of a two-level atom/cavity system as the coupling to the third level is increased, and we find a transition from photon bunching to photon antibunching. The three-level model allows the atom to couple to both field modes for which we calculate intensity cross correlations that exhibit nonclassical behaviors. Finally, we discuss the lack of entanglement between the field modes despite their common coupling to the same atom and the presence of atom-field entanglement.

Entanglement between artificial atoms and photons of lossless cavities

Eugene K. Bashkirov, Maria O. Guslyannikova

We investigated the dynamics of atom-field entanglement for two natural or artificial two-level atoms interacting with a one-mode quantum electromagnetic field by means of multiphoton transitions in a lossless cavity. Tavis-Cummings model is used to describe the interaction of the atoms and real microwave coplanar cavity field. We carried out the mathematical modeling of the dynamics of the system under consideration for various initial states of the atomic subsystem and an intensive coherent field of the cavity. We showed that for small multiplicities, the atoms and the field, which were initially in a pure separable state, can return to this state during the evolution. We also found that for large multiplicities the atoms and the field are in the entangled atom-field state in the process of the system evolution with the exception of the initial time instant. These results can be used in the theory of quantum networks.
