Opening Optical Four-Wave Mixing Channels with Giant Enhancement Using Ultraslow Pump Waves

Abstract

We show that by strongly modifying the dispersion properties of a four-level system, non-existing wave mixing channels can be opened and significantly enhanced. Specifically, we show that coherent optical four-wave mixing with a pump wave mediated by electromagnetically induced transparency (thereby propagating with an extremely slow group velocity) will lead to many orders of magnitude enhancement in the amplitude of the generated wave. Contrary to common belief, a large transparency window, which causes a large propagation velocity, actually diminishes efficient mixing wave production.

Comment on “Opening Optical Four-Wave Mixing Channels with Giant Enhancement Using Ultraslow Pump Waves”

Roberto Buffa, Stefano Cavalieri, Marco V. Tognetti

In their recent study [1] on a four-wave mixing (FWM) process, Deng et al. state that ‘‘many orders of magnitude enhancement in the amplitude of the generated wave’’ is obtained when electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is present. Here we will show that their claim is deeply misleading. In fact, according to the formulas reported in their paper, it is straightforward to show that the efficiency of the FWM generation process is actually reduced by the presence of EIT, and that the maximum FWM signal is obtained in the absence of EIT.

Highly efficient four-wave mixing in a coherent six-level system in ultraslow propagation regime

Hui‐jun Li, Guoxiang Huang

We propose a scheme to obtain a highly efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) in a coherent six-level tripod system by using a double-dark resonance and multiphoton destructive interference induced transparency. We show both analytically and numerically that the optical-wave mixing in such a system with a pump wave and an internally generated FWM wave mediated by electromagnetically induced transparency and hence propagating with matched ultraslow group velocities can result in a significant enhancement of FWM conversion efficiency. This interesting scheme may be used to generate coherent short-wavelength radiation in dense optical media with very low pump-wave intensity.

Inhibiting the Onset of the Three-Photon Destructive Interference in Ultraslow Propagation-Enhanced Four-Wave Mixing with Dual Induced Transparency

L. Deng, M. Payne

We propose a dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) based multiwave mixing scheme that retains the significantly enhanced conversion efficiency enabled by ultraslow propagation of pump waves, yet is also capable of inhibiting and delaying the onset of the detrimental three-photon destructive interference that limits the further growth of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field. We show that the new scheme exhibits a wave-matching condition that is fundamentally different from the conventional FWM without EIT, and the efficient generation of the mixing wave is not critically dependent upon the FWM detuning to achieve constructive interference as required in the conventional FWM. These are significant steps forward in enabling applications of ultraslow wave nonlinear optics.

Efficient generation of a degenerate four-wave mixing signal from a four level N-type atomic system

We study how the four-wave mixing process can be enhanced in a N-type atomic system by using the Electromagnetically Induced Transparency. We find that the generated signal propagates with a slow velocity due to FWM process.

Efficient multiwave mixing in the ultraslow propagation regime and the role of multiphoton quantum destructive interference

Ying Wu, M. G. Payne, E. W. Hagley +1 more

We analyze a lifetime-broadened four-state four-wave-mixing (FWM) scheme in the ultraslow propagation regime and show that the generated FWM field can acquire the same group velocity and pulse shape as those of an ultraslow pump field. We show that a new type of induced transparency resulted from multiphoton destructive interference that significantly reduced the pump field loss. Such induced transparency based on multphoton destructive interference may have important applications in other nonlinear optical processes.

Linear Growth of Continuous-Wave Four-Wave Mixing with Dual Induced Transparency

WANGWen-Yi, LIJia-Hua

Using Schrodinger-Maxwell formalism, we propose and analyze an optical four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme for the generation of coherent light in a coherent six-level atomic medium based on dual electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that the significantly enhanced conversion efficiency enabled by ultraslow propagation of pump waves has no direct relationship with the single-photon detuning, which is different from the FWM with a single EIT. The most important feature is that our scheme is also capable of inhibiting and delaying the onset of the detrimental three-photon destructive interference that looks like a recent scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91 (2003) 243902] andmay be used for generating short-wave-length coherent radiation.
