Absorption Spectrum of Atomic Lithium in High Magnetic Fields

Abstract

Quasi-Landau resonances have been recorded for lithium atoms in magnetic fields of up to 47 kG, with a spacing of only half the cyclotron frequency rather than $\frac{3}{2}$ as expected from previous theory. The intensity distribution over satellites in the $l$-mixing region (including the appearance of parity-forbidden transitions) is discussed in terms of magnetic mixing among nearly degenerate levels. An intensity sum rule is demonstrated.

SPECTRUM CHARACTERISTICS OF AN ATOM IN A STRONG MAGNETIC FIELD

HE XING-HONG, ZHOU FENG-QING, Baiwen Li +2 more

A perturbation method is used to evaluate the energy levels and oscillator strengths of sodium atoms (m=-2,π2=+)in a strong magnetic field. The main features of the calculated spectra which lie in the strong-field-mixing regime agree well with the corresponding experimental results. Besides the conventional quasi-Landau resonance with spacing equal to 1.5?ωc (ωc is the electron cyclotron frequency) near the zero field ionization limit, a series of resonance spacings are found and analysed using the zero order energy formula and the Fourier transform technique. The values of these spacings are in consistent with other theoretical results. Based on the perturbation method, a quantum mechanical explanation for the spacings is given. These resonance spacings are independent of the applied exernal magnetic field.

Configuration interaction effect on diamagnetic phenomena in atoms: strong mixing and Landau regions

K. T. Lu, Frank S. Tomkins, W. R. S. Garton

Abstract We present a systematic densitometer mapping of diamagnetic effects on the principal series of Ba and Sr in absorption, with magnetic fields up to 4.7 T. The n- and l-mixing spectra are resolved in both σ- and π-polarization while the quasi-Landau resonances are observed near and above the ionization limit only in σ-polarization. Configuration interaction produces striking differences in the intensities and spacings of the n- and l-mixed spectra while only the shapes of the quasi-Landau resonances depend on the atomic systems.

Anticrossing effects in Rydberg states of lithium in the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields

Patrice Cacciani, Sylvain Liberman, Eliane Luc-Koenig +2 more

Rydberg states in lithium have been excited from the ground state by absorption of \ensuremath{\pi}-polarized photons in the presence of parallel electric F and magnetic B fields. The magnetic field strength (B=3.11 T) is high enough to reach the inter-n-mixing regime, and a small electric field strength (F\ensuremath{\simeq}25 V/cm) is sufficient for the lowest state of the n=30 manifold to penetrate into the high-energy part of the n=29 manifold. The first anticrossing is thoroughly studied. Away from the anticrossing the spectrum exhibits two lines, but at the anticrossing a third component appears in the structure in the same energy range. This provides an experimental confirmation for the existence of pairs of almost-degenerate states with opposite parities in the high-energy part of the diamagnetic manifold of lithium. The two components of this doublet behave differently at the anticrossing. The experimental data have been interpreted in a global treatment in which core effects and intermanifold couplings are simultaneously taken into account. The different behavior of low- and high-lying states of the multiplet with respect to these two interactions is analyzed in detail.

Atomic transitions of Cs D2 line in strong transverse magnetic fields

Armen D. Sargsyan, G. Hakhumyan, A. Amiryan +3 more

Atomic transitions of D 2 line of Cs atoms in strong transverse magnetic fields up to 7 kG with the high spectral resolution were studied for the first time. The λ/2 method based on the nanocell with the half-wavelength thickness L = λ/2 = 426 nm is used, which allows one to trace the behavior of each of the individual atomic transitions. When the laser radiation has the linear π polarization and magnetic fields B is more than 5 kG, only 16 atomic transitions, which have almost the same amplitudes, remain in the absorption spectrum (at lower fields there are 56 transitions). There is a good agreement between the experiment and the theory.

Alkali metal atoms in strong magnetic fields: “Guiding” atomic transitions foretell the characteristics of all transitions of the D1 line

Armen D. Sargsyan, G. Hakhumyan, A. Papoyan +1 more

It has been shown that the D 1 line of atomic vapors of alkali metals excited by π-polarized radiation in a strong transverse magnetic field includes specific “guiding” (indicating) atomic transitions between the magnetic sublevels of the hyperfine structure. The dependence of the frequency shift of the guiding transitions on the magnetic field, as well as on their dipole moments, is asymptotic for all other transitions. An experiment with a nanocell with Rb vapor with a thickness of half the wavelength (λ/2 method) for ensuring a sub-Doppler spectral resolution has completely confirmed the presence of guiding transitions. Two groups of six transitions for 85 Rb and two groups of four transitions for 87 Rb have been detected in the absorption spectra in magnetic fields above 4 kG. A guiding transition has been identified in each of four groups. Four transitions forbidden at B = 0 have been also detected; with an increase in the magnetic field, their probabilities also approach the probabilities of the guiding transitions.

Formation of Narrow Atomic Lines of Rb in the UV Region Using a Magnetic Field

A. Tonoyan, Armen D. Sargsyan, Rodolphe Momier +2 more

Abstract Magnetically induced (MI) transitions Fg = 1 → Fe = 3 of 87Rb D2 line are among the most promising atomic transitions for applications in laser physics. They reach their maximum intensity in the 0.2–2 kG magnetic field range and are more intense than many conventional atomic transitions. An important feature of MI transitions is their large frequency shift with respect to the unperturbed hyperfine transitions which reaches ~12 GHz in magnetic fields of ~3 kG, while they are formed on the high-frequency wing of the spectrum and do not overlap with other transitions. Some important peculiarities have been demonstrated for the MI 5S1/2 → 5P3/2 transitions (λ = 780 nm). Particularly, it was shown that using a nanocell with thickness L = 100 nm it is possible to realize 1 μm-spatial resolution which is important when determining magnetic fields with strong spatial gradient (of >3G/μm). Earlier, our studies have been performed for 5S1/2 → nP3/2 transition with n = 5, while it is also theoretically shown to be promising for the transitions with n = 6, 7, 8 and 9, corresponding to the transition wavelengths of 420.2, 358.7, 334.9 and 322.8 nm, respectively.
