Magnetization dynamics in isolated Ising chains

Abstract

The Glauber dynamics of an Ising chain or ring is shown to be determined by two characteristic times: τ1 for relaxation of the average magnetization per spin and τ2 for dynamical spontaneous symmetry breaking. An analytical solution for magnetization dynamics in a finite chain with fixed spins at both ends is found by the method of images. This solution is then used to calculate the spin-spin correlation functions for rings and chains. At low temperatures, since τ1 ≫ τ2, there must exist a range of times when the chain is in one of two ordered states.

Stationary correlations for a far-from-equilibrium spin chain

B. Schmittmann, Frank Schmüser

A kinetic one-dimensional Ising model on a ring evolves according to a generalization of Glauber rates, such that spins at even (odd) lattice sites experience a temperature T(e) (T(o)). Detailed balance is violated so that the spin chain settles into a nonequilibrium stationary state, characterized by multiple interactions of increasing range and spin order. We derive the equations of motion for arbitrary correlation functions and solve them to obtain an exact representation of the steady state. Two nontrivial amplitudes reflect the sublattice symmetries; otherwise, correlations decay exponentially, modulo the periodicity of the ring. In the long-chain limit, they factorize into products of two-point functions, in precise analogy to the equilibrium Ising chain. The exact solution confirms the expectation, based on simulations and renormalization group arguments, that the long-time, long-distance behavior of this two-temperature model is Ising-like, in spite of the apparent complexity of the stationary distribution.

Glauber Dynamics for One-dimensional Spin Models with Random Fields

Gabor Forgács, David Mukamel, Robert A. Pelcovits

We present an exact solution of the long-time relaxational behavior of the magnetization in the Ising and $\mathrm{XY}$ chains in a quenched random field. The random field is assumed to be of infinite strength but present at only a fraction of the spin sites. We use Glauber dynamics for the Ising case, and a suitably generalized master equation for the $\mathrm{XY}$ case. In both models we find that for $T=0$, as time $t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$ the magnetization decays as exp (${\ensuremath{-}Ct}^{\frac{1}{3}}$), where $C$ is a constant. At finite temperatures the ultimate asymptotic behavior is purely exponential.

Glauber dynamics of the kinetic Ising model

Zhao‐Di Yang

In this work we study the Glauber dynamics of the one-dimensional Ising model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, for which an approximate solution of the magnetization per site is obtained. When the dynamical critical exponent z is investigated following the treatment of Cordery, Sarker, and Tobochnik [Phys. Rev. B 24, 5402 (1981)], our observation shows that its upper-bound value is the same as the known value, thus implying that z is independent of the range of the interaction. We also suggest a high-temperature expansion approximation which is then used to solve the two-dimensional Glauber dynamics governed by a master equation; this solution is compared with that of the decoupling method. The time-delayed correlation function is also calculated.

SOME DYNAMICAL PROPERTIES OF THE ISING FERROMAGNET

Noboru Matsudaira

Time-dependent statistics of the Ising model proposed by Glauber for the one-dimensional chain are extended to the example of a two-dimensional square lattice. Each spin is assumed to change its state through the interaction with a heat bath. The equations of motion for both the single spin and the spin correlation functions are solved approximately by using a decoupling procedure where the many-body correlation functions are taken as sums of products of pair correlation functions. As a special case, our theory allows the approximate calculation of the equilibrium properties of the system and it turns out that, in this case, our result is an improvement over the Bethe approximation. Both the frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility and the decay of the magnetic moment to the equilibrium state are calculated above and below the Curie temperature. The fluctuation–dissipation theorem developed by Glauber for the linear chain is shown to hold in the two-dimensional case also.

Effect of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions on the Glauber dynamics of one-dimensional Ising models

M. G. Pini, A. Rettori

We study the effect of antiferromagnetic interactions on the single spin-flip Glauber dynamics of two different one-dimensional Ising models with spin $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1$. The first model is an Ising chain with antiferromagnetic exchange interaction limited to nearest neighbors and subject to an oscillating magnetic field. The system of master equations describing the time evolution of sublattice magnetizations can easily be solved within a linear field approximation and a long time limit. Resonant behavior of the magnetization as a function of temperature (stochastic resonance) is found, at low frequency, only when spins on opposite sublattices are uncompensated owing to different gyromagnetic factors (i.e., in the presence of a ferrimagnetic short range order). The second model is the axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising (ANNNI) chain, where an antiferromagnetic exchange between next-nearest neighbors is assumed to compete with a nearest-neighbor exchange interaction of either sign. The long time response of the model to a weak, oscillating magnetic field is investigated in the framework of a decoupling approximation for three-spin correlation functions, which is required to close the system of master equations. The calculation, within such an approximate theoretical scheme, of the dynamic critical exponent $z$, defined as $1∕\ensuremath{\tau}\ensuremath{\approx}{(1∕\ensuremath{\xi})}^{z}$ (where $\ensuremath{\tau}$ is the longest relaxation time and $\ensuremath{\xi}$ is the correlation length of the chain), suggests that the $T=0$ single spin-flip Glauber dynamics of the ANNNI chain is in a different universality class than that of the unfrustrated Ising chain.

Domain wall dynamics of the Ising chain in a transverse field

V. Subrahmanyam

We show that the dynamics of an Ising spin chain in a transverse field conserves the number of domains (strings of down-spins in an up-spin background) at discrete times. This enables the determination of the eigenfunctions of the time-evolution operator, and the dynamics of initial states with domains. The transverse magnetization is shown to be identically zero in all sectors with a fixed number of domains. For an initial state with a single string of down-spins, the local magnetization, the equal time and double-time spin-spin correlation functions, are calculated analytically as functions of time and the initial string size. The domain size distribution function can be expressed as a simple integral involving Bessel functions.
