Admissible cyclic representations and an algebraic approach to quantum phase

Abstract

Nonadmissible, weakly admissible and admissible cyclic representations and other algebraic properties of the generalized homographic oscillator (GHO) are studied in detail. For certain ranges of the deformation parameter, it is shown that this new deformed oscillator is a prototype cyclic oscillator endowed with a non-negative (admissible) spectrum. By changing the deformation parameter, the cyclic spectrum can be tuned to have an arbitrarily large period. It is shown that the standard harmonic oscillator is recovered at the nonadmissible infinite-period limit of the GHO. With these properties, the GHO provides a concrete example of an oscillator rich in a variety of cyclic representations. It is well known that such representations are of relevance to the proper algebraic formulation of the quantum-phase operator. Using a general scheme, it is shown that admissible cyclic algebras permit a well-defined Hermitian phase operator of which properties are studied in detail at finite periods as well as at the infinite-period limit. Fujikawa's index approach is applied to admissible cyclic representations and in particular to the phase operator in such algebras. Using the specific example of GHO it is confirmed that the infinite-period limit is distinctively singular. The connection with the Pegg-Barnett phase formalism is established in this singular limit as the period of the cyclic representations tends to infinity. The singular behaviour at this limit identifies the algebraic problems, in a concrete example, emerging in the formulation of a standard quantum harmonic-oscillator phase operator.

Finite-dimensional Schwinger basis, deformed symmetries, Wigner function, and an algebraic approach to quantum phase

T Hakioglu

Schwinger's finite ( D ) dimensional periodic Hilbert space representations are studied on the toroidal lattice with specific emphasis on the deformed oscillator subalgebras and the generalized representations of the Wigner function. These subalgebras are shown to be admissible endowed with the non-negative norm of Hilbert space vectors. Hence, they provide the desired canonical basis for the algebraic formulation of the quantum phase problem. Certain equivalence classes in the space of labels are identified within each subalgebra, and connections with area-preserving canonical transformations are examined. The generalized representations of the Wigner function are examined in the finite-dimensional cyclic Schwinger basis. These representations are shown to conform to all fundamental conditions of the generalized phase space Wigner distribution. As a specific application of the Schwinger basis, the number-phase unitary operator pair in is studied and, based on the admissibility of the underlying q -oscillator subalgebra, an algebraic approach to the unitary quantum phase operator is established. This being the focus of this work, connections with the Susskind-Glogower-Carruthers-Nieto phase operator formalism as well as standard action-angle Wigner function formalisms are examined in the infinite-period limit. The concept of continuously shifted Fock basis is introduced to facilitate the Fock space representations of the Wigner function.

Generally deformed oscillator, isospectral oscillator system and Hermitian phase operator

Hong-Chen Fu, Ryu Sasaki B

The generally deformed oscillator (GDO) and its multiphoton realization as well as the coherent and squeezed vacuum states are studied. We discuss, in particular, the GDO depending on a complex parameter q (therefore we call it q-GDO) together with the finite-dimensional cyclic representations. As a realistic physical system of a GDO the isospectral oscillator system is studied and it is found that its coherent and squeezed vacuum states are closely related to those of the oscillator. It is pointed out that starting from the q-GDO with q root of unity one can define the Hermitian phase operators in quantum optics consistently and algebraically. The new creation and annihilation operators of the Pegg - Barnett-type phase operator theory are defined by using the cyclic representations and these operators degenerate to those of the ordinary oscillator in the classical limit .

Phase operators on Hilbert space

John A. Vaccaro

A simple formalism is introduced for describing the quantum phase of a single-mode field (or, equivalently, a harmonic oscillator) using a particular infinite-dimensional Hilbert space ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{s}\mathit{y}\mathit{m}}$. This space is spanned by vectors which represent states of the single field mode containing non-negative numbers of photons. It has a symmetry in the sense that it contains vectors in the neighborhood of both the vacuum state and the infinite photon number state. A striking property of ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{s}\mathit{y}\mathit{m}}$ is that it supports Hermitian and unitary phase operators. Indeed the Pegg-Barnett unitary phase operators are shown to converge strongly on the Hilbert space ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{s}\mathit{y}\mathit{m}}$ and so the correponding limit points are ordinary operators on ${\mathit{H}}_{\mathit{s}\mathit{y}\mathit{m}}$. This can be compared with the situation for the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space H conventionally used in quantum optics on which the Pegg-Barnett unitary phase operators converge weakly, in general.

Phase operators, temporally stable phase states, mutually unbiased bases and exactly solvable quantum systems

Mohammed Daoud A, M. Kibler

We introduce a one-parameter-generalized oscillator algebra (that covers the case of the harmonic oscillator algebra) and discuss its finite- and infinite-dimensional representations according to the sign of the parameter κ. We define an (Hamiltonian) operator associated with and examine the degeneracies of its spectrum. For the finite (when κ < 0) and the infinite (when κ ⩾ 0) representations of , we construct the associated phase operators and build temporally stable phase states as eigenstates of the phase operators. To overcome the difficulties related to the phase operator in the infinite-dimensional case and to avoid the degeneracy problem for the finite-dimensional case, we introduce a truncation procedure which generalizes the one used by Pegg and Barnett for the harmonic oscillator. This yields a truncated-generalized oscillator algebra , where s denotes the truncation order. We construct two types of temporally stable states for (as eigenstates of a phase operator and as eigenstates of a polynomial in the generators of ). Two applications are considered in this paper. The first concerns physical realizations of and in the context of one-dimensional quantum systems with finite (Morse system) or infinite (Pöschl–Teller system) discrete spectra. The second deals with mutually unbiased bases used in quantum information.
