Geometrical evaluation of the Maslov index

Satoshi Takahashi, Kazuo Takatsuka

A geometrical method to calculate the Maslov index, which is an important part of the quantum phase, is proposed. This method is particularly useful for the recently proposed amplitude-free quasicorrelation function approach for the quantization of chaos [K. Hotta and K. Takatsuka, J. Phys. A 36, 4785 (2003)]. In this theory the Maslov index is involved with no need to calculate the amplitude factor, which is usually obtained through integration of the stability matrix. Since this matrix constitutes the major origin of difficulty in semiclassical quantization of chaos and since its integration is time consuming, the present method, which avoids the stability matrix, should assist in opening a gate for practical semiclassical quantization of chaos in a large molecular system.

Maslov Phase as Geometric Phase in the Time-Dependent Variational Approach with Squeezed Coherent States

Y. Tsue

Toward the classical description of quantum fluctuations in quantal systems, the Maslov phase occurring in a semi-classical quantization rule is investigated in a framework of the time-dependent variational principle with squeezed coherent states. In the limit of a semi-classical approximation in this approach, it is definitely shown that the Maslov phase has a geometric nature analogous to Berry's phases or canonical phases including dynamical effects. The Maslov phase appears as a winding number in this framework. It is also indicated that this squeezed coherent state approach is a possible way to go beyond the usual WKB approximation.

Geometric and deformation quantization

Christoph Nölle

We present a simple geometric construction linking geometric to deformation quantization. Both theories depend on some apparently arbitrary parameters, most importantly a polarization and a symplectic connection, and for real polarizations we find a compatibility condition restricting the set of admissible connections. In the special case when phase space is a cotangent bundle this compatibility condition has many solutions, and the resulting quantum theory not only reproduces the well-known geometric quantization scheme, but also allows to quantize all interesting observables. For Kähler manifolds there is no compatibility condition, but a canonical choice for the parameters. The explicit form of the observables however remains undetermined.
