Abstract

We discuss the effect of laser induced continuum structure and the modification of quasi bound state of atomic systems as well as its possible applicability towards amplification of short wavelengths in schemes in which no inversion of population is established.

Lasing without inversion

J. Mompart, R. Corbalán

This review paper is devoted to amplification and lasing without population inversion involving atomic transitions in gas media. We start by discussing the main motivation in inversionless lasing research, namely, the generation of short-wavelength laser light. Then, we review the basic physics of inversionless lasing in two-level and, eventually, in three- and multilevel atomic configurations. Finally, we summarize the current state of the art of LWI experiments and indicate the main difficulties with respect to short-wavelength laser generation.

Light induced modification of continua and ionization dynamics

Dimitrios Charalambidis, O. Faucher, Natalia E. Karapanagioti +3 more

We review experimental results on the electromagnetically induced modification of atomic continua and ionization characteristic. Results are presented on laser induced continuum structure (LICS) in smooth and structured continua, in A and ladder type of couplings. Coherent control of the ionization rates is demonstrated in four photon resonant, five photon ionization schemes in rare gases.

Laser-induced photonic-continuum structure

J. R. Kukliński, Maciej Lewenstein, THOMAS W. MOSSBERG

We show that by coupling additional laser fields to a three-level atom it is possible to modify effective spontaneous emission rates and line shapes in a manner similar to that previously associated with cavities and waveguides. The effect is related to the laser-induced continuum structure discussed in the context of ionization processes.

Inversionless amplification in a three-level medium

Olga A. Kocharovskaya, Paul Mandel, Yevgeny V. Radeonychev

We study all possible resonant three-level configurations where a low-frequency coherent pump can be converted into a high-frequency field in the absence of population inversion at both atomic high-frequency transitions. We identify two different mechanisms that provide such inversionless amplification.

Control of the final state photoionization products by laser-induced continuum structure

Stefano Cavalieri, R. Eramo, Lorenzo Fini +3 more

We report on the observation of the modification of the final status products in a photoionization of the Xe atom through the coherent process of laser-induced continuum structure (LICS). The photoionization decay of the Xe ground state into the two electronic continua, corresponding to the two fine structure levels of the ground state of the Xe ion, is varied by embedding a bound state into the two continua through a laser field (dressing laser). The dressed continua, probed from the atomic ground state through three-photon absorption, exhibit different induced structures. The experiment is performed on an atomic beam apparatus which uses a time-of-flight spectrometer for energy analyzing the emitted photoelectrons. The modified final state amplitudes are controlled by the wavelength of the dressing laser. No significant modification of the 2P3/2 continuum has been observed, in the limit of the detection efficiency. The effect is characterized by a window resonance in the slow electron continuum as the dressing laser is tuned over the LICS resonance.
