Stimulated Scattering of Intense Coherent Light

Guang S. He

When a high-intensity laser beam passes through a transparent and homogeneous optical medium, the induced light scattering may manifest the properties of stimulated radiation characterized by threshold requirement, high directionality, and high brightness. This is the stimulated scattering of intense coherent light. Discoveries and studies of various types of stimulated scattering effects have provided a much deeper and more comprehensive understanding of interactions between the intense coherent light and matter. On the other hand, devices based on stimulated Raman scattering, stimulated Brillouin scattering, and stimulated spin-flip Raman scattering can be employed as highly efficient tunable frequency shifters of coherent light. Stimulated Kerr scattering can be used to generate a super-broadband coherent light and to investigate the molecular anisotropy of liquids. In addition, the recently developed stimulated Rayleigh–Bragg scattering and stimulated Mie scattering can significantly reduce the threshold requirement, and provide a highly efficient no-frequency-shift optical phase conjugation wave.

The Effect of Pump Coherence Length on Stimulated Light Scattering

J. Frank Harmon, Michel Bergeron, P.A. Chernek +3 more

We are experimentally investigating Stimulated Brillouin Scattering (SBS) and Stimulated Raman Scattering (SRS) in the transient regime in acetone. While measuring the scattered light as a function of the input energy, we noticed an unexpected “roll-off” in the scattered light as pump energy was increased. Theory predicts as input energy increases scattered energy increases until saturation is reached. We think that the observed roll-off is related to the coherence length of the pump, and we are investigating that relationship.

Review and interpretation of experiments on coherent four-photon Raman scattering

M. M. Sushchinskiǐ

The general theory of stimulated radiation is applied to four-photon coherent Raman scattering. A comparison with the theory of the two-photon scattering is presented. Some peculiarities of the stimulated Raman scattering such as radiation asymmetry, replication effects, rings of the Raman components are considered based on the theory for coherent processes.
