Abstract

Detailed analysis on the tunable reflection based on electromagnetically induced transparency is presented. We adopt the configuration of a four-level atom driven by a bichromatic standing wave. The Maxwell–Liouville equations for the steady state are employed to describe the mechanics of the system and numerically solved using the parameters of Rb87 in a magneto-optical trap. The analytic solutions are also obtained, which lead to the conditions for getting the higher reflectivity. Theoretically, under such conditions, the reflectivity could be arranged as high as 90% with the coherence decay rate already considered. The controllability of the reflectivity provided by adjusting the intensities and detunings of the coupling fields (the two components of the bichromatic standing wave) is investigated as well. The result shows that the two coupling fields can impact the reflectivity differently. Such a feature allows us to control the reflectivity more flexibly.

Goos–Hänchen shift of the reflected beam in a standing-wave coupled electromagnetically induced transparency system

Xiaojun Zhang, Hai-Hua Wang, Chun-Liang Wang +5 more

The Goos–Hänchen shift of the reflected beam in a standing-wave coupled electromagnetically induced transparency medium is investigated. We adopt the three-level Λ system as a model of Rb87 atomic media. Under the influence of two counterpropagating coupling fields, the incident beam is converted into a reflected one, with the Goos–Hänchen shift. We briefly discuss the rules for obtaining efficient reflection in such an atomic system, and carefully investigate the Goos–Hänchen shift and its dependence on the beam width of the incident field. Both the cases with and without Doppler broadening are considered. In order to provide a clearer physical picture on the large shift that could be realized, the concept of penetration depth is used to analyze the shift phenomenologically.

Study on optical bistability in an atom optomechanical cavity hybrid system

GE Ya

Optical bistability in a hybrid system consisting of cavity optomechanical and a four-level inverted Y-type atom is investigated numerically. Steady state solution of Heisenberg-Langevin equation is derived. When the configuration condition of the system in electromagnetically induced transparency( EIT) is satisfied and is not satisfied, the thresholds of optical bistability are studied respectively. When EIT condition is not satisfied, the up-threshold of bistability is adjustable while the down-threshold remains the same one. On the contrary, when EIT condition is satisfied, the up-threshold of bistability remains the same one while the down-threshold is adjustable. When the atom system is under the condition of EIT configuration, bistability can be achieved more easily than which is not under the condition of EIT configuration. Furthermore, after the system reaches the up-threshold,no matter the condition of EIT configuration is satisfied or not,the curve of bistability becomes a linear with the intensity of driving field.

Controllable optical mirror of cesium atoms with four-wave mixing

Haitao Zhou, Dan Wang, Miao-Jun Guo +2 more

The controllable optical mirror is experimentally accomplished in a λ-type three-level atomic system coupled with standing wave. It is shown that the reflection of probe light results from electromagnetically-induced-transparency-based four-wave mixing, therefore the reflection efficiency is highly dependent on the angle for phase matching condition between the probe and coupling fields. The measured reflection spectra show good agreement with dispersion compensation theory.

Goos-Hänchen shift in a standing-wave-coupled electromagnetically-induced-transparency medium

Xiaojun Zhang, Hai-Hua Wang, Zhipeng Liang +4 more

The Goos-H\"anchen shift of the system composed by two cavity walls and an intracavity atomic sample is presented. The atomic sample is treated as a four-level double-$\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ system, driven by the two counterpropagating coupling fields. The probe field experiences the discontinuous refractive index variation and is reflected. Moreover, under the phase-matching condition, the four-wave mixing effect based on electromagnetically induced transparency can cause effective reflection. The Goos-H\"anchen shifts appear in both situations and are carefully investigated in this article. We refer to the first one with the incident and reflected light having identical wavelength as the linear Goos-H\"anchen shift, and the second one with the reflection wavelength determined by the phase-matching condition as the nonlinear Goos-H\"anchen shift. The differences between the two kinds of shifts, such as the incident angle range, conditions for the shift peaks, and controllability, are discussed.

Electromagnetically induced transparency with a partially standing drive field

Dmitry Strekalov, Andrey B. Matsko, Nan Yu

We study electromagnetically induced transparency in a vacuum rubidium atomic cell and show that reflected drive radiation results in the reshaping and shift of dark resonance. We show that those effects are connected with (i) Bragg reflection of the probe radiation in optically thick atomic coherent medium modulated by the standing-wave drive field, as well as with (ii) quantum interference enhanced absorption of the probe radiation in four-level N-configuration formed due to the reflected drive field.

Four-wave mixing in a three-level bichromatic electromagnetically induced transparency system

Guo Yang, Peng Xu, J. Wang +2 more

We investigate the four-wave mixing (FWM) phenomenon in a three-level bichromatic electromagnetically induced transparency system. Theoretical results predict that the FWM will exhibit a multipeak structure under bichromatic coupling fields. The stronger the coupling fields are, the more FWM the peaks should exhibit. Results of an experiment carried out with cold $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms in a magneto-optical trap agree with the theoretical prediction.
