Abstract

Without need of another control light, this paper analyses in a time-dependent way a new scheme to achieve ultraslow propagation of the input probe field through a medium composed of two-level atoms where their upper level is split into two hyperfine sub-levels via some applied static field such as a DC magnetic or a DC electric field or whatever other static field.

Manipulating slow-light propagation modes in cold atomic media

Jing Cheng, Shensheng Han

Due to the finite transverse distribution of the control field and cold atoms, there can exist a set of guiding modes for ultraslow signal field propagating in an atomic medium with electromagnetically induced transparency. For cold four-level atoms, these guiding modes can be manipulated by varying the laser fields and atomic distribution. By carefully designing the distribution of the induced refractive index, we show that it is possible to realize single mode operation for slow light propagation which may have practical applications.

Subluminal and superluminal light pulse propagation under external magnetic field in a vee-type three-level atomic medium

Thai Doan Thanh, Nguyễn Tuấn Anh, Nguyen Thi Thu Hien +4 more

In this work, we investigate subluminal and superluminal light propagation in a vee-type three-level atomic medium under an external magnetic field. The dispersion and absorption behaviors are studied for the cases of absence and presence of a magnetic field. It is found that under an electromagnetically induced transparency condition, the light pulse can be switched between subluminal and superluminal propagation by ON-OFF switching of the magnetic field. Finally, the transient response of the medium is discussed, which shows that the considered scheme has potential applications in magneto-optic switching devices. Controiling Slow Light via Spatial Dependent Control-light Intensity of δ-type

Jia Xin-juan

Based on the fundamental theories and techniques of ultraslow light and storing light information in Electromagnetically Induced Transparency(EIT) medium,I theoretically adopt a special control-light intensity profiles:δ-type profile to manipulate slow-light propagation, and investigate the influences of different control-light parameters on slow-light propagation.Only probe light at exact resonance ω=ω0 can totally pass through the medium.Increasing the parameter β of δ well can make the transparency window narrower.

Magnetically induced simultaneous slow and fast light

Bin Luo, Yu Liu, Hong Mei Guo

A Lambda-type atom coupled by a driving light field and an rf field is restudied. It shows that, owing to Autler-Townes splitting caused by the driving light field and the magnetic dipole transition caused by the rf field, the medium shows distinct characteristics and exhibits the simultaneous slow and fast light at two frequencies. This effect can be attained by simply increasing the magnetic field and making its Rabi frequency much stronger than the probe light. Also, slow and fast light can be converted flexibly between two frequencies by phase control of the rf field.

Electro-magnetically induced transparency in a static magnetic field

Xiaogang Wei, Jin-Yue Gao, Jin‐Hui Wu +5 more

We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the electro- magnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon of atomic 87Rb at the room temperature with a static magnetic field lifting the degeneracy of all three involved hyperfine levels. Two collinearly propagating and linearly polarized laser fields (a probe field and a coupling field) are used to couple one hyperfine level (the upper level) of the 5P1/2 state to two hyperfine levels (the lower levels) of the 5S1/2 state, respectively. In the case of zero magnetic fields, we observed a deep EIT window with the contrast of about 66%. Here, the EIT window width is limited by both the spontaneous decay rate of the upper level and the coupling field intensity. When a magnetic field parallel to both laser beams is applied, the EIT window is split into three much narrower sub-windows with contrasts of about 32%. If the magnetic field is perpendicular to the laser beams, however, the EIT window is split into four much narrower sub-windows whose contrasts are 32% or 16%. This is because the decomposition of the linearly polarized optical fields strongly depends on the orientation of the used magnetic field. The underlying physics is that, in the limit of a weak probe field, an ideal degenerate three-level system can be split into three or four sets of independent three-level systems by a magnetic field due to the lifting of magnetic sublevels of the involved hyperfine levels. In this paper the absorption spectra corresponding to different magnetic field directions are clearly shown and compared. And a straightforward but effective theoretical method for analyzing the experimental results is put forward. Our theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results.
